Unhappy weird ashtray/cointry problem!!!

Hey gang...

I have a '99 TL and have a strange problem. While going on a long road trip, I stupidly put a butload of coins in the cointray/ashtry thingie where the lighter is. Some of the coins must've slipped behind and now I can't close it.

IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!!! It looks like crap. I have the wood kit so the interrior to me looks extra nice.

What do I do??? I tried taking off the tray to no avail. It won't budge and I don't wanna break or snap the plastic.

Other posts on other boards say I have to take apart the console but JEEZ, I don't wanna do THAT. It's a frikkin' cointray.

What I dope I am But I can't be the only one who did this!!!

Help me guys!!

Anthony

There's a little plasitc cover that can be taken off under the change holder. Once you remove that, use a pair of tweezers, or packaging tape wrapped inside out around a flat piece of metal (like a bread knife) to remove the coins.

Good luck.

I did remove the little plastic thing ... but I don't see anything. Whatever is wedged behind the tray, I can't see.

i had the same problem and the first time it happened i took it to the dealer and they did it for me, but the second time i was able to use a paper clip and duck tape to get it out, just bend the paper clip to be able to get it back there and wrap the duck tape around the paper clip and slip it back there and try to attach the coin onto the duck tape and gently get it out, it's like playing operation you have to be careful not to touch the sides or the coin could fall down again!!
good luck

My mom's TL had the same problem...there is two ways it can get stuck...1) coins feel underneth so it can't close 2) the coins feel in back.

#2 is impossible to get out with duck tape or paper clip...i had to disassemble the entire dash and even with that part out , i still had to remove the coin holder completely to get it out...

take it to the dealer and have them take it out....if they can't then good luck taking ur dash apart.

if wiggling the coin holder up and down does drop the coins then you can remove coin holder by unscrewing shift knob, remove two screws from inside bottom center armrest, pull off both plastic wood trim, remove screws securing armrest and gear shift console and you should be able to retrieve the lost change.

once you get it out, change the red velvet piece that's inside. It keeps has a little piece that prevent coins from falling back there.

How is it that a premium luxury car in the $20,000 (used) - $30,000 range has this awful design defect????

First, take the coins out of the tray first. Then, take the bottom plastic piece off. Then, jiggle the tray and all coins should fall to the back into the hole where the plastic piece is. Where do they go? I have no freaking clue. Happened to my TL before, this is how I fixed it, drove me nuts too.

I tried that ...

Removed that stupid little piece and first of all, could barely get my hands in there...

Anyway, I jiggle the tray like a madman. Nothing.

I do, howver, see a nickel that's JAMMED TIGHTLY and won't budge. It's in there but good.

At this point I feel like snapping it off altogether.

its not a design defect, it's just the user's own stupidity to overload his/her cointray.

Look pal, I can't be the only scmuck on the planet that's done this. So, yeah, I'd call it a design defect. Granted, it was my fault, but still, do you think Acura coulda made where owners can pop it off if need be??

Other than that, how's life on Planet Perfect where you seem to live and make no mistakes? Must be great ....

Only if your aim is off and you happen stick the screwdriver into the cigarette lighter. (I hear the blue sparks are quite inetresting)

Just so that we are clear....you are not trying to poke the coin out. All you are trying to do initially is to move the coin so that it is no longer jammed. They you can get to it with a pair of tweezers, tape or something similar.

It's not a design defect, It's not stupidity.

Acura just overlooked the design of the coin holder. That thing shouldn't even been a coin holder, should've made it an ash tray. ACura shouldv'e implemented the coin holder like the one on the INSPIRE. It is right below the "light dimmer switch"
