A way to help our trannys last?

Since reading all the posts about our 5AT and possible problems that can occur the culprit seems to be the third gear clutch packs. There is insufficient oil flow to them which makes them overheat and eventually fail. So to help prevent this from happening to my second tranny I have switched to Amsoil Synthetic ATF, added a tranny cooler and I avoid holding the shifter in third gear, such as when cruising around locally just goofing off following a car I think I can demolish at the next light - you know what I mean. Sure I wish this wasn't the case but the car is so great otherwise I'll live with it. Comments? Suggestions?

Well that's a good point! Also you will probably catch me in mileage as I use a beater mini-van for work and the TL is my weekend ride. Needed the van to carry all my stuff. It is handy but I sure miss the fun of the TL....it's like a party every mile!

Yes there is a short hose located in the rear of the tranny that carries ATF. I tapped into it and ran a new hose up to a transmission cooler that I put in front of the AC condenser. Then I ran another hose back to the first hose to complete the circle. I added a small amount of ATF and now my ATF fluid is cooled externally. A tranny cooler is nothing but a small radiator, so to speak. Cost was about thirty dollars.

Great to hear you're using Amsoil ATF fluid, just a few questions on that.

A.) did you have this done or did you do it? A full change or a # of drain & fill drive things?

B.) anything feel different with the shifts?

Thanks.
