Question Washing in sub-freezing temperature

What's the best way to wash your car? Should I do it my self or does anyone recommend bringing it to a automated car wash/handwash?

You can read this tread about a few peoples views on the mechanical car wash.
http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/003614.html

As for the best way to wash your car? This is my method:

wash from the cleanest part then to the dirtiest part last. Constantly wash out the rag so that you are not dragging the dirt or sand across the pait. Also, wash the car in a up and down motion rather than a circular motion so that you dont get swirl marks (yuck). The next thing is always use 100% cotton towels in washing and drying. As for rinsing, one other thing that I do is, rather than using a nozzle I just use the hose bare. What this does is it allows a nice even flow of water to flow along the body so you can cut down on the spots.

Oh yea, if you are in a hot and sunny area (envy), try to do it in the shade.

Again, these are my recommendations and others may have different.

LOL...hey, don't forget the Puerto Ricans, they take a little longer, and don't do as good a job, but they're cheaper!

I could see how this could be taken the wrong way. But i'm always down with some ethnic jokes as long as it is in good fun.

I like to wash my car in my Garage ...its a least 10 degrees warmer. And i don't drive it unless there is no chance of snow and or rain! I know that is extreme but it works! I just hate driving my car in the salt and sand, so i drive my trusty pick-up.

I've got the same dilemma.

I figure it's better to leave my car dirty and dry, than to try to wash it with hot or warm water from my washer hookup... then put the wet car in the garage.

The dirty car isn't hurting my ego

This is a conundrum.

I use lukewarm water and hook my rinse hose to a faucet in my garage.

I would not leave the dirt on too long. Air has many acids in it and these can etch the paint if left on for extended periods.

Regarding the wet car in a garage syndrome, I have a small floor fan I use to cool me in the summer, and in the winter I run it after I wash the car to dry it out. Rust never sleeps.

When I had the NSX, I used to position the fan near one of the side air intakes and run it for an hour after shutdown, to cool the engine down - my wife thought I was nuts! But you guys understand I am sure......

A friend of mine got scuba divers gloves for x-mas. Keeps his hands warm in the cold outside.

Don't you have to water proof your garage before washing the car in there? If so, how do you do that?

I would rather park my car in the garage, dry, with all the salt and stuff... then wash it and park it wet.

I feel like all the nooks and crannys of the body that hold water will activate the salt that I cannot wash. I don't think dry salt can do anything bad.

My plan is to get to a high pressure car wash as soon as it's above freezing and just spray off the car. Then the car should dry quite well on the way home.

Yeah I got some fishing gloves from Sports Authority and it works very well, almost too well. Started to get sweaty and stuff (in freezing weather too). The gloves really do work. give it a try if you are trying to brave the weather and clean the car.

ITYW, when I build my next house, I will have the floors poured with a taper to the center of each car and a drain. The garage will be insulated well enough to keep it above freezing all the time. Plus there will be PLENTY of room around each car.

PhiTL.. you forgot.. 100% cottom MADE IN USA heheh wont even start with ethnic jokes there :P

The gloves can be had for like $15 at Sports Authority in the fishing department.. the material is neopryne...

Eddie Bauer also has these? but they are fleece lined... these cost a little more.. but man do they feel comfy

I usually goto the self serve car wash with a bucket... use Zaino soap.. rinse down the car... then hand wash.. and then rinse again... then use California Water Blade to get most water off.. (when your car has multiple layers of Zaino on.. water comes right off) then dry remainin with towel. $2 later... u have a super shiny car!

WARNING.. never dry your car after just 'spraying' down your car or going through one of those 'touchless' washes... your car is not entirely clean and you will end up getting swirls all over!
