Unhappy vtec in 4th gear??

Hi all,

I've been reading the threads on this forum for a good while now. Many of your discussions have helped answering a few concerns that I have with my 00 TL-P. However I have never seen a discussion about this one before and this one is really begining to bug me now so I was hoping maybe u guys hold the answer to this one too.

I know that when we red line 3rd gear and upshift to 4th the rpm drops out of vtec range but it will surely climb back into vtec. HOWEVER, for my car, when the rpm climbs into vtec for the first time in fourth, it'll vtec but only for around 300 rpms, then the rpm will drop below vtec range (a little below 4500 rpm) again then when it vtecs for the second time will the rpm steadily climb. Is there something wrong with the tranny, computer...??? Do u guys have the same problem too?

Btw, it does this in SS and D5. I only have an AEM cai in terms of performance mods. I have the same problem when i had the stock intake too.

I've thought about taking it to the dealer, but I don't think I will find an technician willing to go for a ride with me at 200k/h to see me reproduce the problem and nor will I find an open stretch of road during regular dealership business hours to do so.

thanx in advance!

thas strange how you mention that noticed that yesterday....
i tried to reach the point where vtec starts on 4th,
it climbs up but right when it hits 4000rpms drops down back to 3600 and then when this happens it feels like the engine stopped for a quik second.....
is that normal?

I am having a similar problem I was racing my friend and when I shifted to forth gear at around 122 mph there was no vtec the rpm's were like at 4,000 so vtec should have kicked in and I was like wtf and the car stayed like i didnt try to go any faster.

and dont flame me there wasnt any traffic and I was alone in the car so I wasnt endangering anybodys life but mine

Unhappy

Well, looks like some of us are having similar problems if not exactly the same problem as me, but it also appears that vtec works normally for others. i.e. the rpm climbs normally without any dropping back.

Can more ppl try this out (Please do so under very very safe conditions!! Don't want any of you to get hurt or ticketed while testing) and see if they have the same problem? Maybe you have just never noticed. If this happens on a lot of TL-P's or even the TL-S's then maybe there should be a recall or something or at least a reasonable explanation.

thanx

VTEC kicks in around 4400 or 4800 (cant remember) RPM's, not 4000.

this would happen if the rpm drops rite after u switch from 3rd to 4th...

for smoothness...the auto trans will shift slowly therefore u won't feel the jerk when changing gears...lower the rpm slowly until hit the actual rpm for higer gear at lower rpm...

try this...

only little throttle...LITTLE ONLY!!! keep below 2000rpm...use the SS at low spd....switch from 3rd to 4th at 18mph or 30km...in the 4th gear u will see the rpm is around 1500rpm...then slowly it will drop back to 1200rpm as it is at the actual rpm...

yes, i have the same problem. It happened to me about 5 times now and my car seems not to pull any more after the rpm goes down after hitting vtec in 4th gear. I have a 2000 TL-P. So this is not normal on TLs, rite? should i get it checked out?

Question To samkws:

I don't get exactly wut you mean. We all know that the rpm drops after you shift from 3rd to 4th. Are u saying that the part when the rpm kicks into vtec for the first time in 4th(when it reaches ~ 4500 from ~4000 rpm) and the drops back to below vtec and then work properly only after the second time is just another way to smooth out the gear change?? Can you clarify? Does anyone else agree? How come the transmission doesn't do that for the first 3 gears?

If it is in deed what you suggest, maybe I have nothing to worry about after all.

thanx

It might just be your torque converter locking up in it's overdrive gears.

ill give one clear description on what were talking bout,
then please tell me if your cars are like that!

on first second and third gears,
it reaches vtec no problem which is set a 4500-4600,
im on the highway, and i used sportsshift and bumped it up to
4th gear full throttle(after the gear change to 4th drops down to 3500rpm), the rpms steadily climb up to 4000 rpms, and it keeps goin up, but around 4100 rpms it drops back down to 3500 rpms and starts over....
to me after 100 it gets a bit dangerous i stop at 120 mph, just where this incident occured....
its not such a big deal to me, but if theres a problem gotta get it fixed...

I still think its the Torque Converter locking up.

I've had no problems shifting from 3 to 4th.. but backpressure could be a issue.. some of you have intakes..but I don't think any have exhaust.. I think from shifting out of VTEC into non-V range there's a extra bit of air that has a problem dissapating due to our overly restrictive headers... how's that sound?

Did we ever get this fixed?? My car does this and it’s 2019!!
omg. I have a 2008 Acura TL 5spd auto. That does this same shit! No check engine light no issues shifting between 1-2-3-5. I lose rpm in 4 gear then it climbs back up.

Yikes, a 17+ year thread bump, that might be a record. I'm thinking you shouldn't expect a response from the original poster.

I KNOW but this is the only hope I have. I have always been on Acurazine since I’ve had my first Acura TSX. I’ve Owned three Acura’s after that and now I have a 08 TL with this issue and no one knows the answer. I will not bring to dealer. The transmission is GOOD. I’ve never had a issue I did my transmission fluid change with Acura every 30K miles and the way my dealer does it is they drain 80% of the fluid and fill it back up. IT IS REALLY BAD TO FLUSH YOUR TRANNY AFTER ITS 100K or older because it needs the medal shaving to work. If you flush and those metal shavings are gone it’s over for the tranny. I have 182,690. No SHUDDERS, NO SLIPS, I can get to 110 pretty quick except this 4th gear rpm drop and then gain after it drops for no reason.

Lets be sure of terms here...

If you are saying it is bad to flush your tranny using a Machine Flush, then it is bad-BAD-REALLY BAD to flush the transmission, regardless of miles.

However, if you are saying it is bad to replace 80% of the ATF after 100,000 miles, sorry, not true, it is never bad to replace the ATF, regardless of mileage.
