voltmeter reading

What should be the proper reading for a voltmeter gauge? Mine is readying 14.4-14.7 volts while the engine is running. At that voltage reading should the battery be replaced?

Most batteries will pump out 12V so if you are getting a reading of 14.2V, then you're running at the right level.

yeah, around 14V when running. expect closer to 11.5-12V when the car is shut off because no battery is "ideal" so the voltage will usually be lower. when you start having hard starts or the standing battery voltage is any lower than 11V then i would get rid of it. if you suspect the battery is bad then you can always have it tested too for peace of mind.

Hey Steve,

I work at Canadian Tire now, and we have a battery tester. I work at the one at Yonge and 16th ave. It's right across the street from hillcrest mall, and in the same plaza as the Futureshop. Come by tonight between 5 and 10pm, and I will be working. Come to the Automotive parts counter, that's where I work.

hope to see you there.

take care.
