Very upset
Very upset
I was attempting to put on my LSU rear windshield sticker with my dad this afternoon...so we are just measuring up everything and trying to center it....when my dad decides it is best for him to just climb on the trunk and try to put it on....we have Dent #1. So I look away trying not to lose my shit because he is my dad and he is helping me. Next my dad says he can get it out...so I say okay....we pop the trunk and we try to take off the gromlets holding on the insulator to the ruff of the trunk...no luck. In the blink of an eye...without asking me....my dad decides to stick the pointy end of a flathead screw driver through the small slit in the insulation to try and push out the dent that way....he creates 2 convex dents #'s 2 and 3......I'm seriously about to lose my shit. ABOUT how much will it run me to get the 3 dents out????? They are all about 1inch apart and about 1X1in in diameter.

My dad passed away a year ago, never got to see my TL (which he would have loved, sucha gearhead). I would give anything to have a dent in it that he put in it, I would show it off like a medal.
Posessions are bullshit. Dads are irreplaceable. I'm sure he feels terrible about it, don't add any hurt to it or you'll live to regret it.

dent doctor, see if you one of them in your area. they are around where I live and I have seen them at work when I worked at a dealership for a month they are miracle workers and can get dents out with no noticeable evidence that there was one in the first place. You know metal naturally wants to go back to it's original shape. Try checking yellowpages in your area and call them first.
Be glad its your dad and not your friend cuz dents may screw up friendships.
It'll probably cost you a decent amount, but look at it this way, if you're gonna have to fix and paint the trunk, you can completely debadge and fill the two holes after removing the A. Also depending on where it is, you may be able to get a spoiler to cover it up a bit.

Thanks for the responses everyone...I appreciate it. I would have to concur that I am too materialistic. The dents are really not that big of a deal. My dad was just trying to help and was over zealous. I love my dad and he is a good man, just anxious and impatient. Hell, he helped buy me the car so I guess the dents come with how he made it affordable. I'll take it any day over my 1990 Camry LE.

don't need to paint the car and it shouldn't cost over 200CAD.
My friend's dealership can get an entire car done for 100CAD from a friend of his that typicallyonly works on extreamly high end cars, bentleys, lambos, ferraris, etc.. they acutally go over the car with tiny hammers and massage the dents out..the finish rarely has to be repainted and comes out perfectly..
put it this way, I inspected my new TL-S and could find no dents at all... I also do professional detailing so I've got an eye for blemishes and imperfections in a car's finish. My friend later told me that this car had a ton of door dings all the way down both sides of the car along the rear fenders, over ten each rear fender!! None on the doors but the fenders were covered with them. Ther was also denst on the hood, front fenders and trunk, but the big problem area was the rear fenders. I went over the car again and still found nothing but swirl marks, light scratches (expected on a black car, or actually any car for that matter) but still was unable to find a dent anywhere on the car, needless to say I can't wait to get my car so I can start the polishing

sorry bout that bro. that really made me think.
your first solution is dry ice on a very hot day leave you car in the sun it will make the sheet metal (more pliable) when the metal is hotter then shieitte apply dry ice the sudden change in temperature will costrict the metal and pop out the dent
1. remember to wrap the dry ice in a thin towel
2.wear gloves
3. will not pop out if dent is a crease (will minimize)
4. cannot be on a body line.
it worked great for me and no repainting neccesary

I was in the same position as MR at his age when I lost my Dad (33)...since then I have opened businesses, bought houses, had kids, did important stuff that my Dad never saw and I wish he did....when I read what you guys say about our cars....Dad put in a dent....a guy put regular gas in my TL...and rage.....the first thing I do is look for the age....I'm older than most of you guys here but I still have a lot to learn from you all....youth brings on impatients....that's cool, but after you have time to think, put it in perspective....it's also cool that TLsu got pissed at his Dad, shows passion for his car....that's what has brought us all together here, to talk and share ideas, experiences, and stories...but as his cooler head will tell him, he still loves his dad...I had muscle cars in the 60's and 70's as a kid and I'm that gearhead to my son..........the TL that I'm mod'ing will be his soon....it's what we do for our kids that we love....to pass the torch....the cars have changed but the feelings are the same....TLsu, go try the dry ice thing and do it with your Dad, teach him something new...it'll be great....and thank all you guys out there for all your help in teaching me as I tune back into what's going on TODAY within this new car scene

As many have said I would just let it go.... I have lost so much money to family and friend screw ups that I can't even count it all....
Prime example... a buddy of mine offers to help me change the oil in the outdrive on my boat. He says he knows how to do it and has done it many times so I am like, "Cool. thanks". Well he has changed the oil on an alpha drive (mercruiser type) but never on a cobra outdrive which is built like a bravo drive (mercruiser). Hence when we filled the oil up we did it wrong and the next time I put it in the water I burned up the outdrive.
$1500 bucks.
And did I get mad at him.... not really. He was trying to help, so i sucked it up and counted it as a lesson learned. Lesson being he is an idiot, heehee. Seriously however it is only money and only stuff.... it doesn't matter compared to people. I wouldn't even ask him for money to pay for it. If he offers thats one thing but unless he insisted I would just suck it up and press on.

You lucky it wasn't a Bravo III. 10K for an outdrive
And great posts MichiganRich and FluidGrease. I am fanatical about my car, just like everyone here, but when it boils down to it, its still just a hunk of metal that can be replaced. Parents/Friends/Loved-ones and the bond you share cannot.

The more I observe the damage, the less it bothers me. It really doesn't look that bad. Honestly, I think if I took pictures all you guys would laugh. Don't get me wrong they are visible when the sun is out and if you are inspecting my car...but without BRIGHT light and attention to detail you really can't see them. I think what upset me so much was the idea it was a stupid mistake as opposed to something unavoidable. I was just curious if there were any easy and inexpensive tricks you guys knew of to correct the errors. I mean you guys are right it is just a car...I really like my car...but I love my dad. By the way...my dad bought me LSU football season tickets to atone. Which doesn't get rid of the dents...but a nice gesture to say the least.
Thanks for the advice and perspective,
Mark
