VARAD Scanner
I have a blue LED scanner on my TL-S, on the front of the mirror. It turns on when I take the key out of the ignition. I was coming out of the store and there was a cop that came around and said I have to take it off of my car saying it can't be there. WTF!!!!! I told him its part of the alarm and he goes "I don't care. Take it off! Next time I see you, I'm gonna give u a ticket. " I'm like, it isnt illegal to sell, so why should it be illegal to put on. It doesn't come on when the car is on. It goes off as soon as I put the key in the ignition. Can he really ticket me for this? Other cops I've seen really don't mind, this is the first time its ever happened, and I've had it for abour a year now.

The cop may win in court: Blue lights on vehicles are reserved for law enforcement and emergency use only. Even though your car is stationary, the blue flashing light may technically be interpreted as an emergency vehicle's signal.
Why don't you change it to a red or green LED setup? The cops can't say anything about that.

That is the stupidist thing I've heard in a while. You better leave Miami and come to NY cause I thought cops here were picky but now I think otherwise.

the cop was just messing with you...so long as you arent driving around with that thing on, then you shouldnt have to worry IMO. the prohibition on blue lights might just apply to exterior lights like headlamps, taillights, parking lights, etc.

My usual disclaimer--every state is different so you need to check your own laws before proceeding. Here in MA that blue light scanner would definitely be illegal and merit you a $300 fine if the cop so chose. Even if the car is stationary, you cannot mount or display a blue light on your vehicle anywhere where the public would see it while the vehicle is parked in a place the public has access. Many undercover cruisers have emergency lights on the backside of the mirror, exactly where you have your light placed. Even with the vehicle parked in a parking lot, someone may mistake it for an emergency vehicle. Why should that matter? Well, if someone was getting mugged in a parking lot and in a panic looked for a source of help, they may see the light and run to your car hoping to summons the police.
The law in MA was designed so there would never be confusion between an emergency vehicle and a regular passenger vehicle. While I think in your case the cop did not handle the matter in the most diplomatic of ways, he may have legal standing in your state.
As for why it is legal to sell but not mount on a car--for years aftermarket vendors have sold parts *for show only.* You can buy things for your car that would make it look trick on a display stand in a competition. That's perfectly legit, but legal to own and legal to drive on the street are two different things. If you just mounted that scanner for show at a competition, and then took it down when you went home, that'd be fine.

The Florida law is very clear, you cannot display, run or mount any light of blue color in the state of Florida. Remember the ppl getting pulled over by bluelights then car jacked a few years ago. That's when this law was passed. If you got it lose it in Florida...
