Valve Adjustment Problem?
Valve Adjustment Problem?
Hello Everyone,
I just finished adjusting the valves on a 2001 CL-S. All of the valves were tighter than necessary....
Also I noticed the valve adjustment for intake is .20-.24mm and exhaust is .28-.32mm. However on my autozone feeler gauges, they say .020 and so forth respectively. Was the number decimal place just off on the feeler gauges or I using the completely wrong gauge.
Also give me some insight on how to remove the valve cover bolt grommets from the bolts themselves? There's this piece on the bottom that prevents the grommets from coming off.

silicone spray and pop the grommets out
the spec gives you room,,example: min allowed .28 max .32
go for mid spec setting of .30 and you are great
did you use a plain feeler guage or a go-no-go guage that slides in and stops when setting is correct?
Cant say enough good things about a go/ no go feeler guage, for perfect setting
Unless you can tell 4lbs pull on the slider type feeler guage?
its easy to get them too tight !!

Well guys, seems like I was using inches and not mm when I was doing my valves. Time to redo them.
I also have this set,

But they are not bent, really hard to slide them in straight, any tips?

you are very lucky to find this out before turning engine over and bending exhaust valves when they hit pistons,,
thats our problem with interference engine--no spare room!
*and reason to seafoam for carbon removal 1-2 times a year!
extreme carbon build can cause contact of those parts! total bad news!
use the go/no-go set for accuracy
if you need to, bend the main portion of it to fit
I have some bent to fit bmw, another for nissan,,the TL..
they are your tools = modify as needed,,my toolbox has many `special` sockets and wrenches too..several just for valve adjust
as long as you dont mess with the tip where the measuring is done
and you understand the `step` in them is at the indicated size,,
slide it in, if it stops at step= its right
keeps going thru step = loose
wont go in to step is too tight
compare to feeler gauge and you will know what 4 pounds pull is
but for most ziners. and most pro techs= use a go nogo
its fast accurate and simple
always ck clearance after retainer nut tight,,that often messes you up,
but can quickly be learned how much it moves so you compensate
be glad you caught the issue now! there are specs for sae and metric
make sure what you are using,,,all too tight may be wrong tool for the job!
