uhh, city 001, There are things such as new POS. Did you forget. For instance knock-off rims (I learned this the HARD way), or Pizza Hut (instead of a local Italian Pizzaria), hell these rinky dink NEW HOMES made outta cardboard seemingly and springing up left and right.

People who talk about all this money you loose after you drive the new car out the door.... I think this is a falacy. Some people think this number is something like 20%. I have seen alot of almost new used cars for close to the same price as new cars.
Nothing about a new or used car is even close to an investment.
At least 99.9% of the cars out there.
I find that most people who buy USED, can't afford the car they want NEW. Maybe the new Lexus is too expensive so a used one looks appealing. Maybe the car is just to expensive for your budget. One really nice thing about buying a new car is you get the vehicle equipt exactly how you want it and you get the newest gadgets the car offers. I find when people buy used cars there is a certain amount of settling for options they don't really want or options they would rather have.

It really depends on how desirable your car is on the used car market, it's all supply and demand. If you bought a new Hyundai, I can guarantee you that your car is worth 20-25% less once you drive it off the lot. But if you bought a TT coupe, you will most likely lose maybe 10-15%. That's what the dealers will pay for your used car, then they turn around and mark it up. That's why you see dealers listing a 1-year old TT coupe for very little below a brand new one. Of course, they are anticipating some negotiations.
The thing with options is they are not worth that much when you trade the car in. As a buyer, even though you might end up with options you don't want, you're not paying all that much more for them either. I know this from experience, learned it the hard way I guess, when I traded in my A6.
Are we getting a little off tangent here? The guy just wanted to know if he should get a new TL-S or a used GS400. I recommend the GS400 because it's got RWD, V8, and cachet (which unfortunately Acura does not have).

1 - both items are cars (very important similarity)
2 - both are fast
3 - both are good looking cars in my opinion
4 - both are mid-sized sedans
5 - both are higher end Japanese cars
6 - both are solid cars
These are the most important features to me. I am comparing a NEW TLS to a USED GS4 because that sets the price closer together. If I had the money to burn I would get a 2002 GS430 but I don't so I won't. I like both cars. Yes, this is ultimately my decision but I was curious on what helpful advice you guys could provide.

One thing that you might want to consider is that Lexus is considered more a luxury brand than Acura. Not sure if this is important to you. But if you live in L.A., nobody is impressed when you say you drive an Acura.
Being in the advertising business myself, Acura has done a terrible job of marketing themselves as a true luxury mark. It is still seen as a "more expensive" Honda because their recent advertising campaigns have been pretty lame. I like the humor of the Type S spots, but they don't do much for establishing themselves as a luxury brand.
Another problem I hear from Acura car designers is they work with very strict guideliness handed down from Honda headquarters that all Acuras need to resemble a Honda to an extent. I understand they need to market their cars as Hondas in the rest of the world, but it also shows just how conservative Honda is. I think Toyota is taking much more risks in differentiating Lexus from itself, and it too is in a similar situation since Lexus is primarily for the U.S. market (though they are starting to market to Europeans).

Drive through Newport with either and you'll fit in fine. Stand out??? Not on your life! Get what pleases you, forget about us and your neighbors. Factor driving pleasure, reliability, depreciation, warranty, how you feel about the cars and you'll be fine. They are both great cars. Neither has cachet unless you hang out in poorer areas.

In my earlier posts, I did mention that RWD and V8 make the GS the better choice. The deal about "cachet" is just "another" plus for the GS, IMO. I think if Acura puts out some really awesome cars in the next few years, people's impressions will change - like a RWD 6-speed TL, for example.

Matt, the way you wrote it (grammatically) gives the impression that you were referring to the CLS model. Look at your sentence structure; "....I feel guily telling my friends dad to get a CLS. That car is a Lemon in my opinion...". This is a ridiculous discussion.

I agree with you that the GS gets more looks and has more status appeal. When I first told one of my friends that I was gonna get a TLS he did say that I should think about a GS4 because is was more baller. He said he could see me ballin more in a GS, although he did like the TLS he just felt that the GS had more status to it.
Now I hear rumors that the 2003 TLS will be different so now I might have to wait and see whats that about!

I don't envy Lexus drivers in the least and find it funny that anyone would assume anyone would. They have decent capable cars. To my eye (your eye may beg to differ, that's your right) they are ordinary looking cars. I like the GS4X0 features, I think the back looks a little like an 82 Escort and the headlights are getting a little long in the tooth for my taste. It is a more daring design but that dates it as well. The Legend is an example of a conservative design that has stood the test of time well. To my eye it still looks better than the 94 to 98 TL, again only my perception. The TL-S also has a tasteful conservative design and I think it will age well.
The only car any of my neighbors got that had people come out of their houses to look at it was in my old neighborhood. My neighbor bought a Ferrari F512 TR. THAT CAR HAS CACHET BABY. Park next to it and you are invisible. It's not a high quality car, it's crude to drive, but it's fast and it has visual presence and engine sound that is impossible to ignore. He got it for only $100K and considering the fact it will only go up in value got a screaming bargain. Nothing in the Acura or Lexus lineup will get you noticed like that car.

I think you're the exception to the rule. I think it's great you're not into the status thing, which is all the better. I get this nagging feeling that you're a lot older and have loads of money, unlike us young dudes trying to buy fancy cars to "look" like we have money. Peace my friend.

well, ya dont live where i used to live. put 18-20" rims on a gs400, and you're gonna be noticed by everyone....south texas baby..!!!
anyway. i havent lived down there for 9 yrs now, so that isnt why i was in the same spot. i test drove a '99 gs4 and loved it. but the price was $36k for that car and it has 22k miles on it. the price wasnt going down and w/financing, i couldnt afford it. maybe this year will be different.
anyway, i test drove the cls/tls to try to decide what i wanted, and this is what i found out(keep in mind im must an avid driver)
gs400 impressions:
very fast, and quiet. even though we were driving 110mph in houston traffic on 45N
the shift buttons on the steering wheel spokes were to die for...! i got used to that feature in less than 5 mins
i actually like the styling, add rims and tint, not to mention a great stereo system, and ur done.!!!
the power.... u cant beat that power...
and the sticker price. yes, it was $36k, but that is almost $20k less than new
certified pre-owned=100k mile warranty=better than tls warranty
tls impressions:
not bad for a v6
better gas mileage
that new car smell
tighter fitting seat, better lateral support, but not as good as in the cls...
looks arent too bad, but not as good as gs4
more money avail for modding out
gotta love that touchscreen nav..!!!
warranty not as good as id like.
in the end, my wife helped me decide, since this will be her car when i get whatever i want next year, hopefully a used 01 gs4. but since we have never ever bought a new car, and we dont plan on getting rid of it, we went w/the tls. on top of that, we got 1.9 financing and the dealership picked up the taxes, so we didnt have to pay that. so in the end, even though the price was only about $4k difference, the financing made all the difference.
but if i can do anything about all this, i will be having the best of both worlds, by ending up w/both cars...!!! hell yeh..!!!!

Okay, I realize THAT. But you listed that the TL-S warranty isn't as good as you'd like. Since that's the new car, wouldn't it be better than getting a used (even dealer-certified) GS?

Don't Lexus and Acura have the same warranty?
Basic: Acura = 48 mos/50k miles, Lexus = 48 mos/50k miles
Powertrain: Acura = 48 mos/50k miles, Lexus = 72 mos/70k miles
Rust: Acura = 60 mos/unlimited miles, Lexus = 72 mos/unlimited miles
For many of us, the powertrain warranty is the most important piece of the warranty, and with Lexus you get about two extra years (depending upon how you mount up the miles). Similar with rust, but that generally isn't really a big problem for most...

You have got to be kidding...
How can you compair the two. The GS kicks ass all the way. Sit in each car, listen to the stereos, twist the knobs, drive them and decide. It should be pretty easy. You do get a little more for the extra $15,000.
Both cars do get a complete redesign for next year. Something to think about.
By the way... I own a 2002 TLS. Nice car, just not THAT nice.

I currently own a lexus gs300, but i am looking to buy a tls. they both have a bout the same options, and the styling is a bit bland on both, but i love the sound of 260 horsepower compared to my lexus's 220. i drove the tls and was amazed how much pick up and go it had. plus it would be even faster if i chipped it. anyways, if it was me, i would go for the tls, which will definatly have a better re-sale than the lexus which will depreciate about 4 thousand a year for the first 5 years

happy new year fellas!
Sorry, I was on vacation (didn't really go anywhere) and didn't check email or anything for some time. I just wanted to say happy new year to all and I thanks for the responses.
A new GS4X0 would be my obvious choice if money wasn't an issue. I will probably end up getting the TLS, probably wait for the 03 (eventhough not a redesign). I think both are great cars but TLS is more in my price range. Honestly I would love the GS4 but TLS is still a great car. I guess if I get the TLS I can shoot for something faster and better in 5 years (maybe a 3.5 TLS AWD or a GS430 AWD). I want to get married and buy a home within the next five years (possibly go back to school for an MBA) so I need to start budgeting for these things.
On a side note, my girlfriend just bought a 01 v6 LX accord coupe. This should curb my appetite for a new car for a little bit. She decided to buy it this weekend cuz my galant give us a little scare when she didn't shift as I was gunning it on an on-ramp. After reading all the horror stories about failed trannies here I thought my tranny was gone too. The car hasn't died yet and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it was nothing. I don't care to fix the car because it wouldn't be worth it at this point. At least now she has a car in case my galant craps out.
