Question Used Computer/ECM?

I need to replace my computer/ECM (to fix a misfiring issue). I can get a used one on ebay for $100. What do I need to know about buying a used ECM? Do I have to have the dealer reprogram it to my vehicle? How much? Can I get a pre-programmed ECM somewhere else? Can I program it myself?

Thanks!

I need to know the year and model... Type S?

ECM should be reprogrammed by dealer because the dealership has the latest software version for engine and transmission. Likewise, the dealership can clear all previous DTC and any new DTC... $200-$300. Also now would be a good time to add another key if needed.

FYI, misfires can be due to valves being out of adjustment.

Year and model: 1999 TL, 3.2, not Type S.

Mechanic said ignition coil was not getting current, which is why he suspected the computer.

Probably not, honestly. He said he didn't work on Acuras much. I'll take a look myself this weekend.

99 TL has 2 options for ECM replacement... Probably because of navigation or non navigation so buy accordingly... $100 is about right.

Misfires... Replace the spark plug(s) with OEM only. Non OEM may cause misfires.

If the ignition coil isn't getting a charge, then it can't really be spark plugs, but thanks for the advice.

Ahh sorry didn't compute... No current at coil, got it.

Reset the computer by pulling the clock fuse for more than 10 seconds.

Have you ever rebooted your computer to get rid of glitches? Well, same idea here. Basically a hail Marry pass. Worth a shot don't you think? You have nothing to lose by rebooting the ECM.

So I've reset the computer and no change.

I've now purchased my used computer. Any advice on installing a used computer/ECM?

My advice is to let the dealership install the ECM because once it's changed you won't be able to start the car with your keys. Basically the car is not drivable until the ECM is programed to recognise your key's chip. So kinda pointless to DIY. Be sure to bring all your keys and remotes to the dealership when they're doing the ECM programing. Any key not program to the new ECM will not be able to start the car so let them program everything at once. Now would be a good time to add a key if need.

Quick question: Would it be easier/cheaper to just have new keys & remotes programmed to the new (used) ECM?

So nowhere on the cut wires approach? Sounds like a lot of headache going down this path to potentially end up back at the same place if those wires are indeed cut..

I looked the best I could, and I couldn't see any evidence of cut wires.

No, not cheaper but easier maybe if parts are in stock.

The dealer is going to have to program the key to the immobilizer. You could drive the car there and swap it and make it a little cheaper labor wise. Shouldnt take more than 30 min for them to do. There is no software update or anything as these ecus cant be updated.

I was referring to the HDS not the ECM on the latest engine and trans software.

1.0 hour book time for ECM R&R.
