Upgrade OEM Radio System

Hey there,
I have an 01 TL with the factory Bose 6 disc indash changer (replaced single disc). I like the look but hate the sound. I am use to a sound system with some power. My Toyota pumps out 220W with factory JBL system. Can I get my system to be louder and keep the same head unit? Help

Ok, maby not... All the stuff i know of has been wiped out by the damage a few months ago... So here it goes:

The factory system has an offboard EQ, which the low freq sound goes out the HU to the EQ, where the highs are boosted, then is looped back in to the HU, where the high freq is outputted to the speakers.

If you want to just replace speakers, the modified Polk DX-6 is the way to go, but involves soldering a resistor and some other work to compensate for the EQ.

Or, if you have the cash, bypass the EQ and loop the low freq signal right back in to the head unit. These diagrams are avaliable:

Now, I personally used the EQ bypass method, and used JL amps so to properly convert the Ohm level.

My system was this:

'02 Bose HU, JL 500/1 and 300/4, Bypassed OEM Sub Amp, and all door speakers replaced.

Sounded frikin great. I only recently replaced the OEM HU with a DVD unit.

If you want just better sounding speakers, you going to have to go with the Polk DX-6 speakers, and the 9" kicker low profile sub to replace the OEM sub we have.

If you have any questions, just ask myself or any of the forum's veterans, as almost all of us have been through this so many times and we know all the litte tips, tricks, and bugs.

Best setup would be :

- JL Audio or Audiobahn subwoofers w/ amp
- MB quart Mids/highs/comp speakers
- Clarion, Pioneer or Alpine HU... I got the Clarion cause I've heard they make the best HUs.. But Alpine and Pioneer make some really nice ones too.

Kicker is overrated IMO, and the sound quality isn't as good as a JL, Audiobahn or even an Eclipse. The solobaric series have lots of distortion problems too (even tho they hit hard)...
