Type S swap into a '99?

Has anyone here done this? I have a '99 with lots of miles and thought about getting a Type S engine/tranny. I have a 4 speed auto and I know the Type S has a 5 speed. Can anyone here shed some light on what would be required? Or maybe just a normal 01+ with a 5 speed. Thanks from a NOOB

Not worth it. Just trade it for a high mileage 02 Type S. It'll be more cost effective.

I have found a low mileage(30k) engine/tranny combo for $1500. What else would I need? I would rather have lower miles. If there's not a whole lot else I would think it would be cost efective...

you would need a computer, and there may be some misc parts that arent included with the engine you recieve that you would need.
you also may need different shift linkages (not sure) and a shifter that has the 5 gear indicator, if you can get it for that price i say its WAY better to do that than buy a high mileage tl-s even with having to buy parts it would be ALOT cheaper than buying a used tl-s

Plus the insurance rates would be for a 99TL not a 03TL-S You just made a few grand right there.

How about the tranny? Is there an "ecu" or something similar that controls it? Since I would be switching to a 5 speed I imagine that something would have to be done there.

My other thought was maybe doing an MDX engine. Does anyone know if they fit? Obviously the tranny wouldn't.

if this is true...do it and sell your old engine/tranny and youll get the same ammount if not more! youll need the parts mentioned above and maibe more...your looking at 1-2grand instalation + the 1.5 the engine/tranny is going to cost you...

OR, do the 3.5 conversion, youll upgrade to type S hp plus get a **** lotta extra torque...withought tranny conversion your looking 4-6grand though.

might be better to trade in...

I would do the work myself... I have swapped motors in my other cars, so I'm not really worried about the labor end of things. Just trying to figure out the parts.

What do you mean 3.5 conversion? Is this putting an MDX block with TL heads? I'm a total noob when it comes to my TL.

this is the 3.5 conversion http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...184466&page=26.

you can do it out of the 3.2 block. i would buy the tls engine and tranny and do the 3.5 conversion to it. like i stated above you will need a ecu (which controls teh tranny also) but it can be done to yours also.
also keep in mind he is running different pistons due to the fact he wanted to run boost

What are the main differences in the engine between normal and Type S?
I'm guessing:
-increase in CR
-intake manifold
-cams

Are the head castings the same?

the biggest thing is the 2 stage intake manifold. the CR is different. supposidly they have a "special" coating on the pistons. the cams i believe are different.

the 3.5 will make more hp and TQ than teh type s

to utilize the type-s motor in a '99 configuration, your looking at so much more work than it looks like.

1: Motor
2: Tranny
3: ECU
4: Mounts (tranny mounts are a little different)
5: Instrument cluster
6: Shift gate and all attached components
7: the entire VSA system
8: Entire intake manifold
9: Throttle body
10: Airbox (or CAI equivelant)

and whatever the hell else i forgot.

Like they said, 3.5L conversion would be cheaper and better increase than the Type-S conversion.
