TSB on sqeaky seatbelts
TSB on sqeaky seatbelts
Just got my car back from getting an oil change and due to a TSB they replaced both seatbealts and the mechanics due to them squeaky. They also fixed my rattles in the dash behind the left driver vent, I'm so happy. I'll be even happier when they fix on my next visit the creaking noise in the roof liner. But for now, I'm loving my baby!
Good to hear something positive about a dealer. I've had the seatbelt squeak for a couple of months now but I've been avoiding the dealer for this. I keep saying I'll address it myself but keep forgetting about it until I turn the radio off.
You know, the real culprit that causes the seat belt to squeak is a metal tension washer thats part of the bolt assembly that holds the seat belt to the car mounting point.
First let me dscribe the layout. (i should have taken a picture of it when i did the fix) There is a nylon washer that goes through the hole in the seat belt clip mounting arm (the part of the assembly that stays in place - not the belt that comes from the door side) The bolt that holds the belt assembly down passes through the nylon washer. The metal tension washer is there to press against the nylon washer, presumably to hold the belt mounting arm into position when the belt is unbuckled. If you remove this metal tension washer, the squeak is gone for good, and the belt mounting arm stays in position anyway. The washer is less than a milimeter thick and causes no change in the way the belt performs, lines up, etc. so there is no danger possed by removing it. Just be sure to properly retighten the seat belt bolt and your all set. I tried the WD40 trick for a while, but as the tension clip continues to dig into the nylon washer, the noise came back again. Finally, I pulled the seat out to get at the bolt and study the mechanism, and thats when i made the discovery. Its a lousy design, but as i said, its easily cured by eliminating this virtually useless part. DO NOT remove the nylon washer.
