transmissions....

Hi everyone...this is my first post I've been a lurker for a few days and I thought i'd join. In the next few months, I was planning on buying a 99 tl. Today I was reading that the 99 has a 4 speed automatic transmission and the 2000 and up models have the 5 speed auto. Is this true?>

So...accordingly, I'd be better off getting a 2000 model, right?

Thanks

This is true the 99TL had auto 4 speed sport -shift tranny & 2000TL & up have auto 5 speed sport- shift. It all depends if you can find a nice 99 go for it. The 99TL you have to shift up from 1st to 2nd when in sport -shift mode. The 2000TL + will shift from 1st to 2nd byitself in this mode. The 2000 has a diiferent intake than the 99. This gives it better performance & around town response ,fuel efficiency. The cars have indentical 225HP the 2000TL is a tick quicker so if this does not matter to you go for 99. The 99 will have just about the same things except 5 speed tranny& new intake. If you plan on mods that would not be a problem.
The other thing is 2000 & up have DVD NAV don't Know if you are looking at a Nav model.

We recently just got our preowned 2000 3.2TL and couldn't be happier. We were originally considering preowned Volvo S70, BMW 3 series, Infiniti I30t, and i can tell you that we could not have made a better decision for the dollar in getting this car. Also, one thing we found, is that the 3.2tl holds its value better than similar cars from the competition. We looked at the 99 3.2TL also, and if you can find one in good shape and the price is right, it's a great car. We would have taken either 99 or 00, no problem.

Hope this helps. I can tell you that you'll find many more positive comments and reviews about the 3.2TL than on many other boards talking about Volvos, BMWs, Infinitis. Being on this board, convinced us to really look hard at the 3.2TL, and we were convinced that it was a buying decision that we wont regret.

Good luck in your purchase!

I have a 99 TL. If I had the choice again, I would have waited for the 2000. My friend has one and it shifts smoother and is just better to drive than the 4 speed. By the way, not to scare you but I have some problems with my tranny.
