Transmission Problem

My brother just recently brought in his 00 TL for a transmission leak with 20,000. After looking at it, the dealer says that they have to replace the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. Shouldn't the replace the transmission with a brand new transmission instead? All of which are cover under warranty. Has anyone had a similar problem with there transmission.

A rebuilt trans is as good as a new one. The trans is taken apart and all seals, gaskets, etc. are all replaced with new ones.

I just had the tranny to my Accord replaced @ 100,000 miles with a rebuilt unit and it is really smooth. The dealers do not bother repairing any longer, they just replace the whole unit. Mine of course was no longer under warranty. After freaking out @ Honda and the dealer about the reliability of their trannys and the cost ($4000 CDN) I was able to get the cost down to $1,500 CDN, partially under warranty @ warranty rates.

I am starting to wonder about the reliability of Honda/Acura, especially their trannys. If my TL has a similar problem, can you say LEXUS. This would be hard as I am a Honda man.

I blew the tranny on my '93 Vigor also (111, 000 miles). I really babied that car and I was kinda pi$$ed. Dealer quoted my $3,200 for a remanufactured unit. The Vigor trans is more expensive than the Accord since the engine and trans if mounted in a longitude method (north south) vs. transverse (east west).

My uncle is a mechanic and his cost to rebuild was $1,400 US. We ended up finding a used one from a wrecked Vigor with 30K miles for $750 (my uncle's wholesale cost).

I figured I would drive it for a while, but then I saw my car and I fell in love.

Hope I have better luck this time.
