Transmission parts

So I am now in the transmission trouble club. My 1999 TL is in the shop and the guy says he can get a rebuilt one for about $2700. He said he would have to get parts from the dealer if he could rebuild it. He said the torque converter would have to be replaced. I just thought someone here would be able to give me some information and advice. How much should I pay for a rebuilt transmission? He said it has a 100K warranty for parts and service. Where is a good place to get transmission parts other than the dealer?

Thanks,
Will

It's covered by warranty as long as you're not over 100k miles (and even then you can fight and most likely get it replaced free) - but you have to go to the dealer. The dealer will most likely give you a car to drive while they're replacing your transmission. Why not take it there?

If your car is under 100k then why don't you just go to the dealer for the parts since both parts and labor are included w/ the warranty!!

It has 130k so I didn't think that was an option.

I have heard that if you contact Acura Corporate there have been cases that they will replace the tranny under a "good will" gesture.....it's worth a shot.

ya, try that at least - maybe you will get some off at least. I have heard people with even more miles get it replaced for not full price

Sometimes, past 100k (well past, usually), they'll pay for the transmission but you'll have to pay for the labor. but still better than full price.

Well, it is not looking good for your suggestions. I called the dealership and he said to bring it in and they would see what they could do. The car as 250 miles away from the dealership, already partly torn apart. The dealership says that if they can't get the company to cover it, which is most likely, it will cost in the $5k range. The shop that has it now says it will be in the $3500 range with a rebuilt one.

I agree, talked with Acura and they will do a "good will replacement" with the same shitty transmission in some cases. but It beats paying for something that was designed badly and is not your fault.

problem is it sounds like the other shop has it riped apart already. 3500 for a rebuilt with a 100k warranty is great. Yes alot of rebuilders get teh parts from the dealer, and the torque converter does get replaced

check this site... they have a bunch of stuff on their site like "manual-automatic transmissions""shift your auto like a manual'"beef up your stock transmission"... I'm confident they would have something that would work for our cars..

http://www.levelten.com/store/import...s/acura_cl.htm

These are bulletproof solid aftermarket transmissions... They show the price for the torque converter but the price for the trannie isn't listed, "call for price".

I am seriously considering picking up one of these bad-boys either when my TL passes 160k km (100k miles), or when the turbo is released for our car (that torque will destroy our stock trannie).

I have yet to call the company about this issue but I'm seriously considering talking to them about making a package for our TLs... Acura will eventually stop replacing their expired trannies under good will and we, the owners, will get bent over the table. It would be comforting to know a company is able to set us up with a bulletproof transmission that will take any abuse this car can dish out...

Plus it would be sweet to add paddles to our car with a beefed up tranny..

I did call them. He said they have (or can build) transmissions of the 2nd gen TL. He quoted a bunch of stats like increase 1/4 time, 0-60 mph and such. It sounded pretty good. He said it would increase the gas mileage. He said all the problems with the transmission are corrected. The price he told me was $3500. If I had the money I would have done it. If I would have done that and had the shop where my car is now install it I would have been at about the same price the dealer would have put a stock rebuilt trans in, maybe even cheaper.

I am too broke right now though. I am having a used trans sent to the shop for $880. My whole bill should be less than $2000. If the transmission is good it is a great deal. If it is bad I hope it lasts until I have an extra 5k of cash and get the level ten tranny.

So you're buying a used tranny that's just going to crap out on you at any time?!? Better start saving now for your next one. Anyway the tranny install cost shouldn't be anywhere near $1100, There's a few places about 45 minutes from me that advertise tranny installs for $250. So if you're spending around $1100 to $1200, I guess it's not too bad, hope it lasts ya, good luck.

When Acura replaces these trannys with rebuilt ones, does the torque converter get replaced. I've been told by some that they do, but when I asked corporate they indicated that mine was not replaced (just the tranny).
