Car started sputtering while doing 50mph - I believe it was going in and out of gear extremely rapidly, like flickering, and a whole bunch of lights in my dash were flickering as well - the TCS, Maintenance Required, and others (I can't remember them all, cuz I was freaking out). It was like the ignition was being turned on and off very rapidly. But I know it wasn't the battery terminal connection b/c my headlights and my speedometer dash lights stayed on constantly, without blinking. But I'd lose the ability to accelerate along with the flickering.

So this craziness started happening out of nowhere, while I was on the highway today. The tranny has NEVER slipped, and there have been no other problems/symptoms. So the car sputtered on and off intermittently for about 3 minutes, until I stopped my car on the side of the highway. I waited for a few minutes, then turned the car back on and drove the rest of the way home without incident.

What is going ON???

 

a 99? I would think ignition switch- very common failure
Acura has a recall on them for 99s and will replace it once in the lifetime of the car
But they used the same part so it fails again, then the customer needs to read the DIY here and spend $50

If your not sure the recall was ever done call acura at 1-800-382-2238 x5
or the dealer service dept can run your VIN to see if its been done

 

Well to be honest, if your car only stayed in low gear and wouldnt change gear, my friend had a 99 also, and all he did was changed a sensor and that shit worked like nothin ever happend.....he said it even ran better after the sensor swapp........

 

Ignition is my guess.

 

thanks, i read the ignition threads it seems like that is it. not sure whether to use the part ending in A01 or 305, though. seems like A01 works, and some recommend the 305 but someone wrote that the 305 didn't fit. i'm gonna go to acura tomorrow and see if they have both pieces, and i'll compare.

 

hopefully the RECALL was never done and they will install a new switch at no charge to you!

 

 

According to my VIN, the recall was done before I got it from the previous owner. It should have been replaced with the -305 part. Is there any way to tell from the part itself whether it was actually done? Some people on here have said that Acura has been saying they replaced it, when they never did.
