Trans Fluid

While i was getting my idiot light checked out, i grabbed stuff for an oil change and half of a trans flush.

Will this fluid work, or did i just waste some money?

Valvoline - Import multi-vehicle - Full synthetic ATF

I just know this trans is well.. obtuse, and i don't want to mess it up.

Ok, Thanks for the 1,000th time. I'll hit the honda-acura shop tomorrow and get the real stuff.

Can i still use this to flush my power steering?

Just return the atf. Don't put anything in a honda power steering system that doesn't say it's approved for that purpose. You're better off putting it in the trans.

^ Its for the flush to the P/S system he don't mean to replace the P/S Fluid itself with ATF.
You use ATF in the P/S as a detergent flush.

Fill it thru the dipstick so you wont have to mess with the oil jet, Although its slower.

I have an internal jet, so i can fill it with standard fill procedure. I'll take the unused ATF back.

When ya take the fluid back, check on an external "spin-on" ATF filter.

Lucky you, I assumed you had one since you have a 2000.

I returned it all, and put in spec.

Shifts like I was on the clutch.

It's a beautiful thing.

were you getting any trans dirty selenoid symptoms?
= at very light throttle coming off a stop- a light shudder in shift from 1-2?
any probs? or just a maitenance change to the new formula dw1?

did you do the drain and refill once, or 3 times with 5 minute drive between?

use nothing but HONDA PS fluid in the TL ps,,its VERY picky about that!
note on flushing ps, ck www.seafoamsales.com tech section for its use in ps
also get 5 foot garden hose with ID dimension to match OD of lower ps hose at res.

CLAMP the hoses together after slip fitting together
or I can assure you of a major mess

note: place some cardboard under front wheels to reduce friction to ground surface and leaving black crop circles on the driveway

flushing ps requires engine running- turning the wheels full lock to lock repeatedly to force fluid out of hiding
until its empty!
refill and start engine- keep refilling and turning - then drain as you turn etc
the procedure is in owner book or diy section,,may take a few refills and drains to get it clean

I thought i was supposed to drive it for a week between 3x3 changes...?

So that the trans fluid gradually changes to "new".

You can. When I did my 3x3 I did it over three days, but not because I wanted the transmission to adjust. I just felt lazy. To my knowledge there isn't a set time you have to wait between every 1x3.

Dirty solenoid? Have any more info on this? I've had a shutter on the 1-2 shift for a while that I assumed was the start of my transmission going out again. If I can instead clean up a solenoid or two, that would be awesome!

I don't think there is really anything you can do for a bad/gunked up solenoid except change the fluid, filter, and pray.

Oh, and i just had hard shifting, no slippage. All of my "idiot" lights have been addressed.

Thanks to 01tl4tl for the suggestion on the P/S flush.. But does you username say "2001 TL For The Loss"?

Actually the more i have read on BITOG, the Valvoline fluid seems to be a good fluid for our trans.

You can take it out and clean the screen on it. Many have found them to be clogged/clogging up.

My way of dealing with the slight shutter is to put the shift gate in D4 it magically disappears. This works for me even though I checked every solenoid/filter and drain and fills and nothing looks bad.

On an unrelated note.

I know when i first bought this thing, i accidentally put the trans in manual mode. I thought "This thing shifts weird".

However, further reasearch reveiled that I was a retread.

BITOG is Bob Is The Oil Guy its a good site.

Every solenoid you see on the tranny has one.

Ah, good.

That should keep the wife off me for another 3-4 months.

"I'm reading about the car" seems to have worked well so far.

there are 2 you can access externally and replace or clean
requires agile hands and removal of 3 layers of skin to reach iirc

if you dont have the original owner book go to www.owners.acura.com and register with VIN, get free download of owner manual with great operating tips in it
plus safely store radio nav codes and look up lots of info about your specific car

the- Im looking up something about the car- works well at my house too~

note the owner book details a 3x3 atf change

Regarding a 3x3 transmission fluid change.

You have to buy more than 9 quarts because more than 3 quarts come out at a single time. 10 quarts to be able to keep the dip stick at in between the fill lines.

Between each flush drive the car around going through all the gears before doing another flush.
