Trans #4--lasted 6 Miles...
So this one didnt fail completely...yet! In case you arent familiar, I have an 02 TL-S, 100K, and trans #1 acted up last Dec...Orig dealer replaced it with #2. It failed this August on a harsh 2-3 shift and errratic downshifting and was replaced with Trans # 3...an OIL JET trans... That one lasted for 2 weeks, and failed completely, rendering me without a car for a week while I fought with Acura Client Services for a loaner, since I have moved far from my original dealership and no one but Davis Acura in PA could help me out. So Davis installed another rebuilt trans, #4. I picked it up today.
I drove off the lot and the first shift into 3rd was like getting rear-ended. I drove a few more miles, and my rolling acceleration while in third gear resulted in a downshift to 2nd, which was so bad it threw me into the seatbelt. The trans has 6 miles on it. I managed to get it back to the dealer (Whose service is TOP NOTCH) and took a rie with a tech and it wasnt acting too bad, of course, so the service mgr took it for a drive...His response was "There's something wrong" and he commented on the erratic shifting and harsh downshifts into 2nd...
He called Client services for me, and my only resort is to buy another one at a hell of a deal and have my current TL titled as "Lemon"...but I dont want a new one. I bought mine to drive 250K like most Hondas...
My other option is to have them install another trans...which is where I left off with them. They gave me a great Loaner (as they should) and will order another POS trans for me. I will call Client Svcs tomorrow and demand that a competent local rebuilder do a complete rebuild. Obviously, there is an issue with Acura cranking out our old junk trans and not rebuilding them, just inspecting and doing the oil jet mod.
Just venting....

Didnt discuss detalis, but I understand they cant outright buy the car back without me going into anoter one...unless I seek legal action, which is my next route
I'm friggin tired of making payments on a car I have been without for 9 weeks out of the last 10 months...

I dont want to get off topic here but Davis is a great dealership and the only one I trust my nsx at. Besides they offer starbucks coffee there and have a internet cafe in the waiting area which makes the time pass faster.

Yes they are an excellent dealership. I hope my comments above were not taken as sarchastic, they really do have top notch service and excellent people. They are the only dealership (besides my original) that would give me a loaner right away, even though i didnt buy the car from them. And they are very understanding of the situation and willing to help.

in cali the life of a car as far as the LL is concerned is 120k. if you got 100k trouble-free miles out of it and it's LLed then you would get about 18% of every payment and taxes you ever paid on it + plus payoff if any. look into your specific laws before you sign w/ a lieyer/lawyer

mine went out on me at 80k, i beleive and at first the dealer tryed telling me that nothing was wrong but i had the same problem with my 94 626 so i had knew. after that i had no problem getting a loaner and everything. now i have 102k i beleive but no sign of this problem. i think its all about how we drive our cars. what i mean was when mine went out i was playing around with the manual shift but that days before and then bang it went out. i was trying to pull of from the light but i just would shift. i literally had gears burn up and metal shaving in all in the gearbox. i dont know, thats a something we all in the tl family need to keep pounding the dealers for all across the us. they got to keep extended the warranty on these things.

Damn my tranny died at 15,000 and im getting my first one rebuilt. . i hope im not in shits creek with this one. . i just got rid of an 03 Hemi fully loaded damn 38,000 truck and it didn't run right at all Stalled and went on it's own !!! thats the fly by throttle system they have now a days. . anyway i lemoned it and lost some money but i owned it for 7 months and it was in the shop for pobably 2 of them i still managed to put 10,000 miles on it and that costed me around 4,000. . .BUT I DID give it to them with BALD tires so i didn't mind that part. . . .. Wish u luck man. . i didn't have to get a lawyer mommy and daddy took care of it they stayed out of court and got a check for the truck and i went str8 to acura thinking i wasn't goingto have my car in the shop for anything and now this is the 3rd time it goes in for the tranny and they're finally replaceing it. . first time they said there was nothing wrong. .second time was the oil jet kit or w.e and now a rebuild. . i told them i almost lost a race cause of the tranny. . got stuck in 2nd. . i had to go to neutral and back to drive. . i still pulled on the legend.!!!

It sounds to me like the last 2 trannies were installed improperly. Getting a good seal on the tranny isn't easy, and if your 3rd one died in 2 weeks and the 4th one died in 6 miles, it sounds like a bad install. I've had it happen before (not on my TL-S though), put about 75 miles on a rebuilt tranny before it died on me. The seal was bad and the car had leaked out all of its transmission fluid. It did shift quite hard and nasty when there wasn't enough tranny fluid.
Nothing against your dealerships.. it happens. I'd imagine if you got it installed elsewhere or made sure that an experienced tech was installing it that you might have better luck.
... And for those that still believe that driving habits and SportShift are causing the tranny problems, I suggest you go over to Acura-CL.com and read up on the NHSTA report from Honda about the tranny problems (in the tranny forum). It explains exactly what the problem is with our trannies. SportShift, if anything will help preserve your tranny more-so than normal D5. Simply put, quality control and a poor design is the biggest reason for failure.

if i have a second failure i am buying a bmw 330xi. i don't give shit. do not put up with this. either get a VR tranny installed (and it better be free of charge to you or damn close to it) or dump the damn thing. that is not something to put up with. i am really sorry it had to happen to you in the first place.

Don't they see what they are putting in? Or maybe the technicien is not a qualified one!
