Tranny problems / fluid change?

Did you ever change the transmission fluid on the car?

I have been told that its voodoo the change the fluid, to always leave the original stuff in there. I never got this from a mechanic but this is what friends tell me.

I have never changed trans fluid on any of my cars and never had a problem.

My last car (Chevy Beretta) had over 135k miles on it. It had many repairs but never a transmission problem. It shifted as smooth as the day I got it.

Opinions on this?

Follow the car's manual for "severe" servicing your TL. I think for 30k service, the tranny fluid is changed. Changing the fluid is cheap and it ensures that youre keeping your tranny as clean as much as you can. The last thing we want is if we have problems with the tranny, dont want Acura telling us that we never maintained it. I'll be changing mine before the 30k mile service. For my other car, we change it every year as part of yearly "tune up". They also replace the tranny filter on most cars. I don't think our TL has a filter but has some type of screen that is cleaned.

Manual says change every 15,000 miles. Had mine done and no tranny problems to date. Knock wood....

I changed my tranny fluid at 30K miles. No knocking before or after the change.

On my Accord, I never changed my tranny fluid until 60,000 miles. Then @ 90,000 miles, and shortly after that I had to replace my tranny. I will for sure change the tranny fluid @ 15,000 miles, as one of the complaints was that Honda said I did not change my tranny fluid enough. I still got them to pay for the lions share of the cost.

I was starting to get some rough shifting awhile back, when I took it to the dealer they told me they were going to change the tranny fluid. After they changed it everything seemed back to normal and i've had no problems since then

What year's manual are you looking in that says 15K?
My 2000 owners manual says to change the tranny fluid at 90K, which is more or less what I'm used to doing... Does the 2001+ manual say otherwise now?

I consider myself to be pretty concerned with proper routine maintenance on my cars. I've always done my own oil and filter changes (every 4K without fail), tune-ups, compontent replacements, etc. Having said that, in all the cars I have owned, I have *never* changed or flushed the tranny fluid in any of them. And I have *never* had a single transmission-related problem or failure. Here's a list of the cars, and the mileage they had on them when I got rid of them.

'75 Plymouth Fury - 3-speed auto (column) 175K
'81 Chevrolet Caprice Classic - 5-speed auto (column) 135K
'87 Chevrolet Camaro - 4-speed auto (console) 110K
'93 Nissan Sentra SE-R - 4-speed auto (console) 85K
'94 Geo Prizm - 5-speed manual 150K (wife's car)
'97 Nissan Maxima SE - 4-speed auto (console) 80K and counting (still have it)

The first three cars on this list were subject to numerous powerbrake/burnout sessions as I owned those in my "younger days," and hey, who hasn't done a smoke show with a Camaro? And now I have my '02 TL-S. Obviously I've read quite a bit on this board about tranny problems and it does have me somewhat concerned. Will I change/flush the fluid? Probably this time, but definitely not every 15/30K. Now I don't redline my cars all that often so I don't think I may stress the components as much as others here.

Of course, I probably just jinxed myself...
