Question Tranny problem: 99TL and 00-03 TL are different?

Many people have talked about the tranny problem of 99-03 TL and CL. My 99TL has 120k now but there has been no tranny problem.

But I still worry about it and I talked to my dealer today. They said that 99TL has less tranny problem than 00-03TL.

I found the original letter from Honda America.
==========================
October 2002

Dear 3.2TL and 3.2CL Owners:

American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-02 3.2TLs, all 2001-02 3.2CLs, and some 2003 3.2TLs and 3.2CLs. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of original sale. We are providing this warranty extension because a higher than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 4-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.
==========================

They did not mention 99TL !!!

I think maybe 99TL only have 4-speed Auto Tranny which is different from 00-03TL of 5 speed.

Can anyone verify this?
Is it true that 99TL has less tranny problem??

What is your opinion? Thx

yup. its very true that a tranny failure in a 99tl is alot more rare than 00-03. and yes its because we have a 4-speed auto compared to their 5's. im not saying that tranny problems dont occur, but depending on your driving, its less bound to happen.

the chances of the '99 tranny dying are the same as if it were in any other car with no known real tranny problems. The extended warranty was originally only going to be for the 5 speeds, but Acura realized that most people would bitch, so they included the '99 knowing that 85% of the problem is with the 5 speed tranny.

Thanks for all the answer. But how do you get this information?

I am sorry that my question looks dumb.
I am new to this forum and cannot find the answer even using the search function.

I have checked the sticky thread about tranny but there is nothing about the 4AT and 5AT difference.

Is this topic discussed somewhere in this forum? Can you give me a pointer?

Btw, I have read the petition

http://www.petitiononline.com/acura/petition.html

and find that there are a lot (NOT LESS!?) of people saying their 99TL tranny dies.
It seems that the chances are the same....

Actually the 1999 transmissions are "worse than average" in term of reliability, according to the Consumer Reports subscriber-based surveys. The 2000-2003 TL transmissions get a "much worse than average" rating, which is the lowest rating they give out.

So while the 1999 TL's 4-speed transmission is statistically more reliable than the 5-speed tranny used in the 2000-2003 TLs, it's still worse than average.

FWIW, the transmission in my 1999 TL failed at 173,000 miles.
