tranny or gears?

well the other day i was going to the airport to pick up my cousin and was on the highway and was going around 60 and suddenly i felt a hard jerk. something like you would hit the brake padel very hard and then stomp on the gas padel again. it got me worried i thought i was going to break down on the highway. then as i was going the car would have a trouble changeing gears and for a moment it would seem as it was in neutral and the car wouldnt speed up and when i got home i put it in reverse but it wasnt moving and the D5 kept blinking then i turned it of and turned it on and thats when it worked again.
If anyone knows what the problem may be i would really appriciate it, because i asked a couple of people and there giving me random opinions..

Have you ever changed the tranny fluid? Also, change out the tranny filter or such to avoid lack of lubrication, this could lead to overheating to trigger the blinking D5.

If he didn't tell you he did, then he didn't. Do one drain and refill, plus changing out that tranny filter. you should be able to search 'tranny filter' or atf filter.

I bought my car off a friend and this is close to what happened to him when the transmission failed. He said he was going about 55 and it felt like it slammed into park but then started freewheeling, and he managed to drive it the 45 minutes to the dealership. But the transmission was definitely done for.

yeah your rite the symptoms were that the tranmission was done for and that either i have to get it rebuilded or get a new one. well the mechanic told me the job was $1200 and 6 month warrenty. is that a good price? im gonna find out from a few other shops as well

It sure sounds like a great price but you might need to be a little wary of getting it done somewhere other than a dealership. I know the latest revision is supposed to be holding up alright and I don't know exactly what's different. For $1200, I assume you are talking about the rebuild option and that may not address the design issues that cause the failures. I'm sure somebody else will chime in with more details.

A: you cannot buy one of these trans brand new
all are rebuilt- only the age of the case changes,,case made before 2005 or after

B: does this guy have actual experience doing a TL trans- if not he is way guessing on the price,, based on normal type trans
low on a TL is 1800, average 2500 and highs to 3000+
all depends on selenoids, metal disc plates, what all is worn out,,using the regular rebuild kit with all the gaskets and seals, plus use kevlar clutches etc

Yeah, I really was trying to distinguish between a rebuild that came from Acura vs. one from a local shop. I'd want the one from Acura, as it is likely to have the latest case and all mods they have deemed necessary.

anything obtained thru acura warranty or goodwill/partial pay- since 2005,
is the new case design,,may be a used unit already,,but the case was made from the new castings with better oil passages, and oil jet kit moved inside of the trans case

acura uses `good` parts, but not the top of the line kevlar clutches used by aftermarket.
If you have a known post 05 case, its worth a local shop WITH EXPERIENCE doing it

iirc the KIT not including upgrades or extras cost what they are asking for a rebuilt trans? so their labor was worth nothing?
No description of anything, or maybe car crashed right after acura unit went in etc
Sounds very shady to me,,but I dont trust much anymore

you know,,a lot of times--you get exactly what you paid for!!
also known as: How many dollars is `free` going to actually cost me??

So if my transmission were to go tomorrow, since I'm way out of warranty, I guess I'm interpreting you to be saying I should go private rebuild as opposed to through a dealership. Is there a way to ensure that the starting point for their rebuild is a post-2005 transmission?
