Tranny Fluid on Rebuild and couple of routine service advice
Hey guys, taking the car in for oil change on Wednesday. I had the tranny rebuilt at 93k. I now have 116,000k. Just about now is time to have the tranny fluid changed right? I do not want another failure. Also, should I go with a flush or just the drain and top-off?
I saw Jiffylube(they always do a good job with my full synthetic oil changes), has a full service(top off everything) synthetic oil change and full tranny service service for $150.
Firestone does the full synthetic oil change with coupon for $47.80. I figured I should call them tomorrow and tell them I want the tranny done.
Anything else? Car runs great right now.
HID issues another story. Driving an hour to the best shop to have a redo at a good price.

BTW, the carfax says the timing belt was changed at 75k. I assume they did it because of the age of the car and not the miles. When should I do it again? I'm thinking 150k. The previous owner did everything on spot at the dealership and it's all on record. Low miles. He had it detailed a little too frequently for my budget. Crazy.

If your going to have a shop do it for you its imperative that they use Honda ATF DW-1.
All they can do is a drain and fill, hopefully they don't use a flush machine which is a big NO on these transmissions.
With that said $102 seems too much on something that can easily be done by yourself with 3 quarts for $15 and some tools.
But anyways if you decide to use the shop ask what fluid they use if its not Honda DW-1 run.

THANK YOU ERICK!! I am really glad I ran today from Jiffy-lube who do a full flush. If it's just drain and fill I can do it, but what about a filter, does it have one? I'll check online now.

Your welcome.
It has one on the top but since it was recently rebuilt you don't need to change it.
Heres a video to help you out on that. Also ATF Z1 is mentioned since the video is before the DW-1 was available.

Yeah, ya can save a lot of money by DIY on simple stuff like the oil and tranny fluid replacements. Just buy 5 quarts of synthetic oil plus filter, along with 3 quarts of DW1 tranny fluid.
Do everything while the car is safely supported for less than half the price of your "Quickie-Lube" shop. You'll have the satisfaction of knowing that the work was properly done and you won't have to worry if the right fluid was used or if the drain bolt gets stripped.

Oil Change and Tranny Fluid Change
~5 quarts synthetic oil
~Oil Filter
~4 quarts Honda Dw-1 (more than three quarts come out)
~Tranny fluid filter
Note: Shop around for specials on oil. The tranny fluid should be right in the middle of the dip stick. The engine oil can be toward the top of the dip stick.

Be careful....they usually don't put the premium oil you pay for. Why should they when there is no noticeable difference in performance?

Yea seen that video years ago and after going to a quick lube place nearby I learned my lesson after they messed up the drain bolt.
Started doing my own oil changes ever since. Might do a DIY in the upcoming summer for this.

When I had my Jeep GCL never had a problem at oil change places, oil change every 3000 miles. With the TL all fluids are monitored and changed by me.
~oil every 5000-7000 miles(mobil 1 synthetic)
~transmission every 15,000 miles 1x3(Honda DW-1)
~brake once a year(synthetic)
~radiator 30,000 miles(prestone and changing to Honda)
~power steering 30,000 miles(Honda)

Just my 2-cents: I've done 3x3x3 tranny fluid changes every 15K on all my rebuilds with Honda fluid and they've all only lasted ~90K - don't think the more frequent changes help.

3x3 on every 15k is excessive IMO, I just do a single drain and fill yearly and done.
Honestly though I cant wait till the trans give up since I have another one that I rebuilt myself with updated parts, but for now just trying to get the most out of this one.
Were the rebuilds in the Z1 era ?

Hey Severin, so assuming that ya were the original owner and presently on the 4th tranny.....3 of which were "rebuilt".
Apparently, your TL is close to.... or over 300k now. Are ya going to go with the Honda AV6 if there's a next time ?
~ Was the first tranny replaced under warranty by Acura ?
~ Was the converter and various solenoids also replaced each time ?
~ Was the same tranny core used during each rebuild ?
~ Was the same tranny shop used each time ?
~ Did the failures share any common problems ?

I'm the original owner; currently at 261K miles.
1st (original) transmission died at 88,067 miles on 1/27/05 and was replaced at Acura under warranty.
2nd transmission died at 180,791 miles on 1/7/10 and was rebuilt at a local shop; needed a new partial case due to some internal wear. Converter, clutch packs, etc. replaced. Don't know about solenoids.
3rd transmission died at 257,454 miles on 12/6/13 and was rebuilt at the same local shop. Converter, clutch packs, etc. replaced. Don't know about solenoids.
All 3 failures manifested as 3rd gear slippage.
So, I'm currently on my 4th transmission.
This will be my last transmission on this car so I didn't bother with an Accord tranny; I'm looking into the TLX later this year.

Hey Severin, thanks for the detailed info on your tranny failures. Seems like ya stuck by the old gal despite all the hassle ya had experienced. I'm surprised ya hung in there this long, but I think that your decision with the new TLX will prove better than another rebuild at this point in time. Are ya concerned about the new 7>9 speed trannys used in the TLX ? Until then, best of luck !!!
