Tranny Fluid: ATF-Z vs Dexcron III

I was checking my Trans fluid recently and I discovered that it was so low that it wasn't even touching the dip stick. I checked out the owners manual and it stated that ATF-Z should be the only Trans fluid you use... but if there isn't any around, which there wasn't, to use Dexcron III as a temp replacement...

I ended up putting a whole bottle in before it got to where it should of been. Now that leads me to two questions:

1) Does it REALLY matter whether its ATF-Z or Dexcron III?

I know they always tell you to use honda products...etc.. but does it make that much of a diff....

2) After 10K miles on my car, should the fluid be this low???

This leads me to believe that either its always been this low or that it evaporated or leaked else where... Could this be a common occurance in most of the failed trannies?

All I know is my car is no longer shifting as hard as it did before..
