Tranny failures - where to report

provided from rominl

Thanks to the help from copland007 He got a tranny failure on his TL Type S on the freeway when the car was doing 80mph. A very scary story, but long story short, he got interviewed by the Highway 1 Contact team of the LA Times.

John O'Dell is the editor of that column (I believe) and he interviewed copland007 over the phone. He will be posting an article about the tranny failure on Acura very soon.

I have heard countless stories about tranny failure. In order to make Honda to admit it and a possible recall, we need to work together to make the issue public so Honda can't hide.

So here I STRONGLY suggest all those of you who have had tranny failures to contact John about your story. How it failed, in what situation, your treatment, ignorance from dealers before tranny fails, etc...

But please do NOT contact him saying you THINK your tranny is going, etc... Please only contact him if you HAVE / HAD a tranny failure and dealer either replaced or fixed the tranny in any way. I don't want John to be flooded with emails. Here is his contact:

I have emailed John O'Dell regarding the article on transmission failures. I had mine replaced at 32k under warranty. This is obviously a manufacturer's design flaw. I have a friend who has the same car (2000 TL) and states his trans. started giving him problems a few months ago- he unfortunately ignored them, and now he is out of his warranty period. He was told by a dealership that he would need to pay $ 5k for the repairs. I told him to call the 800 number of Acura in California ( the service desk) and demand that repairs be made as a manufacturer's defect. If enough people complain to the head offices and indicate that they will give Honda Corp. bad press regarding this issue, I think the Honda Corp. will want to issue a recall or at least a service bulletin, as they don't want all the bad press. I also advise everyone out there who had a trans. failure to write or call Acura in California- it's the only way to make heads roll!

Just wanted to move this thread back on top before it gets lost in the shuffle.
Thanks. Stan

Whoops, didn't see the new thread with the LA Times article. My fault.
Thanks. Stan

Please call NHTSA also for failures or complaints. NHTSA is a governing body of DOT that oversees complaints from motorists on the safety and performance of their vehicles. NHTSA is where you'd see a recall recommendation would come from. They investigate trends and order a further investigation when they see an abnormal trend in complaints.

But to get the NHTSA to issue a recall on the trannies is to actually file a complaint where someone's injured or even killed. That raises the flag on a prompt investigation. I hope that no one gets hurt or even killed, but if you've been in an accident because of a tranny failure, please don't hesitate in contacting the NHTSA!

Log onto NHTSA and file a complaint! www.nhtsa.dot.gov

The exact link on the NHTSA website is:

https://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/oscri...Q/VOQ/voq1.cfm

This is a secure form to send the data about a safety defect on a vehicle. Safety is the important thing to remember when reporting these transmission failures to NHTSA. They don't care at all about your warranty, whether it will cost you money down the road to fix it again, how it might affect resale value, etc. All they investigate are potential safety problems with cars. Everyone reporting these failures should stress the potential danger of these failures happening at highway speed. As copland007 can attest to, it could very well prove to be fatal.
