Post took out resonators!

I bought Comptech Exhaust last month and i thought that it would be much louder so I decided to take out my resonators and have a bigger downpipe of 2 1/2'. When i started the engine, OMG, its really really loud now. Maybe i didnt want it to make it THAT much louder so i might take it again to at least put one of the resonators back. If anyone took out resonators, how do you like it? I dont know if i should just leave it or put at least one of them back on.

Oh yes, you will get a ticket especially from the CHP. You might want to put the resonators back on.

I have a Magnaflow axle back exhaust and I had the resonator closest to the mufflers removed. The resonator that looks like a mini muffler. All I could say was wow! The sound is MUCH throatier. My exhaust sounded just like the comptech's b4 resonator removal. Now they sound much deeper, and not ricy at all. Plus, it might've picked up some top end horses since that uneeded restriction was removed.

I out on Flowmaster 50 series, 3 chamber on my 2000TL, and I also took out both my resanators. Sounds So Sweeeeeeeet!!! I have felt a difference in power and gas milage. I am getting AEM Intake also which will make the flow of all my exhaust alot better.

After a whole day of driving my car without my resonators, i have decided to keep them. I have began to love the sound of it. It gives it a really nice sporty deep thorthy bass noise to it. BTW, i drove passed like 5 TLs and all i can say that they look pretty amazed~!!! =) And as far as for tickets, i dont really care. I mean, I'm 20 and i believe im not gonna get a chance to do this to my later cars. =)

Not trying to be rude but what exactly are you calling a resonator? Because we only have one. I'd like to know what you removed and what it has to do with your exhausts.

There is a pre-muffler in the B-pipe called a resonator. It is right after the cat. Removing it will make your car pretty loud.

I had a custom exhaust built with Bullet mufflers and it barely made a differnce. So I had them take out the "pre muffler/resonator". Sounded great at higher RPMs but way too loud under 2750. I took it back and had them put a smaller "pre muffler/resonator" back in. This took a lot of the bite out but it is still a little too loud for me.

I was thinking that if I install some sound barrier (perhaps DynaMat) in the trunk that the lower RPM's won't be too bad. Anyone who says that the TLS is well soundproofed, they are wrong. It is that "pre muffler" doing most of the work.

Anyone have any ideas?

BTW - I had a woman at the dealership who owns a 2001 TL compliment me on the "throaty" sound.

You are right about the Pre-muffler. The Accord V6 has an almost identical Y-pipe (b-pipe) as the TL with a pre-muffler about 2 ft after the cat. converter. I had a full catback system in there before, and let me tell you, it is LOUD. The sound you hear at low rpm isn't much from the rear mufflers, but from under the car.. Therefore, even if you were to put dynamat in the trunk, it's probably no use. Now at the time, I had the Comptech headers in,..but follow the story. After 1.5 years of headache-inducing-I-lost-all-my-low-end-torque 2.5" catback system, I decided to to buy a stock B-pipe back (yeah,..dumb me, I discarded it at the muffler shop) with Comptech axle-back mufflers. I was amazed at how much noise had disappeared, and most of the noise can now be isolated to the rear of the car, but not under the car. Here is the final discovery, the pull at high rpm barely changed, nothing lost at high rpm that I could feel in my pants. I even got lots of low end torque back!! Most people say they gained power as a psychological effect from the extra noise produced. It's like saying bolting on a catback gives 20HP that you can feel,...that's a total B.S. You don't feel the 20HP, you hear the damn loud sound that makes you feel you have 20HP more. The resonator/silencer is there for a purpose, and by means, keep it on.
