Took the car to the track today.

Myself and three co-workers went to Firebird raceway tonight. My car ran twice, won twice.

Here are the slips from the runs. For the first run, I dropped the tire pressure to 25 PSI to see if that will help drop the 60" times, it didn't help. After the run, I pumped them back up to 38PSI. That improved the trap speed by almost 1.5 mph.

If you plug the #s from the second run into 0-60 calculator, you will get 6.6 seconds, which is amazing for a car with 176k miles.

The video is of the first run, my camera died after it...so second run got recorded by my friend, I will post it once he sends it to me.

Car had 75% full gas tank, a spare, jack, four tennis racquets, 45 tennis balls, and set of golf clubs in the trunk.

Mid to low 15's, you stock or no? I couldnt tell but were you just waiting for the green light and then mash on the gas or did you launch?

Car is 100% stock outside of the air filter. 176k miles. I was power braking it at 2-2500 RPM. Launching the TL with automatic is not a possibility.

Well i call power breaking "launching" so i guess. You dont have SS mode do you since yours is a 99?

I usually turn my TCS off and switch it to SS mode

Mine is an 03, I never used the SS during this. I leave it in D3 with TCS off.

LOL from first look it seems like a 99, maybe cause you only had your corner lights on.

Any reason why you leave it in D3?

why is it amazing that a car with 176k miles can still do a good 0-60 times?
the engine probably runs better than when it was new!

99s do have SS. And better yet, in the 99 you can shift from 1-2 when you choose, unlike the 00-03 that do it for you.

Third gear takes the car through to the top speed in the 1/4 mile, so to keep it from accidentally shifting into 4th I keep it there. This is more of a habit from my mustang 5.0 days, that auto had to be manually poked to stay in the gears you wanted. But seems to work on the TL as well.

As far car running factory times at 176k miles, this goes against the stereotype that people have of cars with over 100k miles being junk. I know a lot of people that avoid buying anything that exceeds 100k, this car proves them wrong. Maintenance > low mileage.

You probably could have knocked 2tenths off by gate shifting

Oh and at your mileage your motor is just broken in. My tl ran low 13s this summer and my motor has 300k on it.

Hmm, how could gate shifting shave so much time? Car will still do 1-2 shift on its own even in the SS, so that leaves me with 2-3 shift. Does SS allow the car to rev higher, or does not cut power on the up-shifts?

wouldn't it be better if you kept traction control on?

i'm not sure if this is for stock cars, but i remember reading somewhere on a 3g tl diet thread that said traction control is your friend and not the enemy.

On 3G maybe, on high powered AMG/M division cars- absolutely. On 2G, traction control is designed to reign in the wheel spin, not to maximize the launch as on AMG cars. It cuts the power on my car and bogs it completely, so leaving it on is pointless. You can test when it is wet, mash the gas and see what happens once wheels break traction.

our TCS applies the BRAKE to wheel with higher speed
it only works up to 16mph/25kph then it shuts off
Its original design intent was to get you up an icy sloped road.. from a dead stop

Thats why you turn it OFF for drag race start

SS has higher line pressure and will force a faster shift

AZ is this the trans with the desert run issues?

my 01 has full control of SS 1-2 upshift

seafoam will keep your engine like new inside,,and oil changes

general note for racers-
DO adjust the valves and clean out the TB and intake
Seafoam works well for injector cleaning etc a week before race

run with all items removed from car- if the worst happens and you eat wall upside down and spinning,,golf clubs are a 100 mph hazard to workers and spectators!
not to mention the weight penalty
I would run an aftermarket headlight HID kit to save weight too!

Good information there 01tl, yes this is the same transmission. I can also shift the 1-2 in SS, but transmission shifts on its own during the 1-2 if left alone.

Gate shift (place the shifter all the way down in 1st), NOT SS. Gate shifting will let you hold 1st a little longer and 2nd longer. It reduced my tl-p times when i was auto (best of 14.9).

I wish i had video taped my race with a friends slightly modified 04 mach 1 (which runs mid high 12s) where i ran door to door with him to 120 and actually pulled on him after that to 140
