Question TL-S or WRX?

Ok folks, no lynching here please. I'm actually wavering between these two cars right now.

Purchase date looks like around early next year or late this year, depending on the stock market (yeah..yeah..I know...wishful thinking)

So. Like the title says. TL-S? or WRX?
Although the Comptech Supercharger is hopefully coming out this fall/winter, I don't want that taken into consideration. (no tomatoes please...I KNOW 260 + around 50 from the SC will give us 310hp overall...but that's an additional cost I don't want to take into consideration right now)

Let's keep this thread civil. I want legit arguments here.

Thanks.

whats a wrx?
I think hes referring to the new Subaru WRX.
Its a performance version of the Impreza, and about 227hp.
I dont even consider these 2 cars being remotely close in comparison.

TL-S ALL THE WAY!!!!!

I say go with the TL-S. It will have more room, more luxurious features and more power. The Subaru has All Wheel Drive, but if that isn't important to you, why bother with it.

Well, if you want to mess around with the car, modding it and racing it, I'd go with the WRX. But if you are fine with a damn good daily driver, go with the TL... I too debated during the summer between the two. Going with the TL type-s.

The WRX is not in the same class as the TL-S.
It is best to compare with the Type-R.

Just did a little research on the new WRX, and not sure what would motivate someone to choose this car over the TL. Comparable in horsepower, but that may be where the desirable similarities end. Sound system looks weak, climate control is nonexistent, seats don't compare, etc., etc. Didn't check price, though, so maybe that's an incentive. I know my feelings, and it's clearly in TL's corner, presumably TL-S.

If you want lots of power AND all wheel drive then check out the Audi Quattros'. Otherwise it's TL-S all the way!!

They are both great cars, but how would you compare the 2?
They are in different catagory with their own competing models. I wouldn't mind having both in my garage, but I certainly have no reason to compare them head to head.
Maybe you can compare the WRX to the RSX? or RSX type r if there is going to be one.
TL-S....well, it's kind of hard to find a competitor in this akward segment.
You can compare it to a 330i, but it ain't RWD.
You can compare it to a LS V8, but it ain't V8.
Maybe you should consider celica gts while you are at it

Are you comparing the base TL to the WRX? The TL-S has 260hp and the WRX has only 227hp with 217 lbs of torque. Not bad, but 30 less then the TL-S. I believe the price will be around the mid 20's. Check this link out for more info.... www.new-impreza.com/index.htm .

The WRX should be an amazing drivers car. Its small, agile and fast. The TL-S is going to be a fast touring car. If you intend to keep the car for more than 3 years or so, I would go with the TL-S but you if want some serious fun - WRX. The Impreza's looks are love it or hate it but it doesn't get much respect in the US. Its a feared giant killer pretty much anywhere else in the world.

If you care about performance go with the WRX, luxury the TL-S.

There was a review with the WRX that got consistent 5.7-5.5 0-60s for the US WRX.

Dizzy, I'm looking at both of these cars as well. Before the WRX info was released I was going with the TL-S all the way, but the performance numbers on the WRX are hard to ignore.

You're right, the performance numbers are indeed hard to ignore. But I think ignoring the Acura brand name is even harder to do. I'm going with the TL-S. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies.

Since both cars will be out by the time I'm ready to buy, I'll be test driving both.

The WRX's "bug-eyed" headlights leave a lot to be desired...I prefer their old look.

Just some FYI. The WRX U.S. version will have the same engine as the Japanese version...but a bit more restricted due to its 3 cat convertors. STi will be providing aftermarket parts for Subaru USA. So the 227 turbo will easily go up to 280...possibly 300+ with a few simple mods.

RSX can't even compare w/ the WRX. Almost every magazine across the world have written amazing things about the WRX/Sti. Multiple winner of all the rally races around the world, its the undisputed dominant rally racer of the 90's according to most auto mags. (yes..the Mistu EVO series comes close too). Audi's are overpriced Volkswagons that make me feel claustrophobic when I'm inside...and yes..I've already tested the A4/A6 series already. For 25-30k, the WRX seems like the best bang for the buck...but......

The all-wheel drive is a big factor in my decision. However...quality is also an issue since past Subaru's have had quality control problems ranging from "cheapness feel" to fit and finish. So I guess I'll just have to wait till March/April when both cars come out.

Some inside info...some sources are saying that with Subaru USA's new influx of money from its sales of the outback series...they may be set to enter the luxury sedan market as well. So saying that the WRX is not within the same market is a bit premature. My analysis is that the WRX is going to be Subaru's 2nd bid to get into the luxury sedan market...the L.L.Bean edition of the Outback (25k-30k) is their first attempt which so far looks successful.

Thanks for all your replies. I'll test drive both once they are released and post up my review afterwards.

Rallies and road tracks are completely different. I wonder how well the WRX will do in the, say, Touring Cup races to run with the S2000's. I believe most of us here drive/race their cars on solid roads.

Incorrect. We do not have the JDM engine w/ 3 cats. We have an engine similar to the JDM engine but it is without the AVCS (like VTEC). It is the same engine Europe gets, with more boost. 300 is not possible with the stock turbo according to people who have tested the new cars engine. Its almost putting out as must boost as it can. Itll only give ya about 14.5-15lbs. Stock is 13.7 or 13.8. Prodrive says they will only provide Performance kits for 250HP, all they feel is reliable for a stock turboed impreza. The STi has different turboes BTW.

Check out this link. http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caran...02_impreza.xml

It's the Feb Car and Driver preview of the WRX coming to the US. Looks like 3 cats to me.

Also see the latest issue of Sports Compact Car for the import turner views on what can be done to this car.

With Comptech's SC hopefully out by this fall/winter...and upgrades/ possible replacement of the WRX's turbo, it should be interesting to see the hp comparisons.

As I stated before, I'll be checking out both and posting my initial views on each car once both are released.

If anyone does the same...please post up your views. Pricing looks like 24-27k for the WRX and 33k+ (who put their deposits?) for the TL-S.

Just ask yourself this: TL or Impreza?? Heh... TL of course!!! TL-S and WRX just faster versions of the two... but i'd still go with the TL-S. If i had the TL-S, i'd take that badge off though. Just so people wouldn't know wassup. Heh....

I know the guy who did the damned test!!! LOL! He didnt even have much time with the car. 6 seconds is really bad for the impreza and he said he doesnt know why it was soo slow. He was guessing from the 17in BBS rims added enough rotating mass to drop the 0-60 by 3 seconds.

WRX 0-60 in 6 secs...fast

BTW The price is similar on the 2 cars, therefore a good comparison. Still TL over wrx

I have a 97 Outback Limited, and that's a near-luxury car like the TL. My Subaru has 57000 miles on it and has been driven since Sep. 96 and has absolutely no squeaks whatsoever! The car is as solid as it was when we drove it off the lot. I am absolutely impressed with the build quality of Subaru. Becuase the WRX is turbocharged, getting more power out of the engine is "easier" with both electronics as well as bolt-ons.

I would gladly buy another Subaru, but since I need more room, it would have to be a WRX version of the Outback!! Good luck with your decision...

Sorry I meant 0.3 seconds off the 0-60 time not 3 seconds.

"Becuase the WRX is turbocharged, getting more power out of the engine is "easier" with both electronics as well as bolt-ons."

With standard boltons, yes. But the boost the turbo is pushin is already pretty high for that turbo.
