Well my buddy has his S2000 in the shop because some lady changed lanes right in to him. Anyway, he got a 2002 maxima SE auto with the manumatic transmission. He called me up and told me to come over for a test drive. We typically dislike nissans mainly because of their interiors. Well this Maxima wasn't bad. You could tell it wasn't extremely nice though. The center console was most annoying due to that button your elbow hits while resting on the console. The button causes the console to raise about 3-4 inchs. Over all the interior was nice. I just think honda's have a nicer look to them. Now as far as wind noise it was quiet....extremely quiet. I punched the gas and you could barely here the engine. In that regard I was impressed, I think Honda could improve on the noise you here in the TL-S. The Maxima shifted quick also, something that effected the race BTW. It shifted quick and smooth. It had 3000 mles on it, and still seemed very clean for a rental. We went back and got my TL-S. We lined them up (turned off VSA) and we ran them. My tires spun quite a bit more than the Maxima's (I guess that's due to having Potenzas vs. our ****ty tires) so he got about a 3-4 feet better start. We shut down at around 70 due to the streets we were on. Then we lauched them from about 20-30 mph. Once again the Maxima down shifted faster, so he got a hood length on me. From there we were even. I started to pull back up to him but we had to shut down. We did the rolling start twice and both times the TL-S took longer to down shift. THerefore gave the Max a small advantage. We didn't run a manual run nor a highway run...maybe later. All in all I think they are extremely close in straight line acceleration. I do think if I was given time I would have pulled by him. The out come kind of ticks me off though.

This sounds about right... I think TL-S would have gotten smoked if it was 6-Speed (with good driver, of course).

So basically it sounds like they are about deadeven (automatic vs automatic). I looked at both cars and just liked the looks of the TLs better (inside and out). But that is just a personal preference. Thanks for the info.

Nice run! and NO you wouldnot have pulled on the MAX I own them both 02 Max, 02TLS, they are very very close in acceleration. The Max pulls harder form a start the TLS gains in the Higher RPM's ranges but neither never pulled on each other up to 80 a friend of mine and I ran them on the 190 In Carollton. Yes the Max has always been able to downshift quick in the auto it does a good jod for being a 4spd auot vs. the TLS 5. I actually prefer the look of the MAX inside vesus the TL more sporty looking to me. What is a manumatic, Maxs dont have that all it has is a gated shifter?

If it was dead even, that is good for TL-S.
People at Maxima.org is getting crazy track time on their 2002 Max Auto. Wonder if it is the tranny they did good job on or something. (Basically, low 14s)

i raced my friends max GLE and beat him from the start...i don't think i should have but we ran twice and all you have to do on the auto is just pressed the gas so i don't know how he could mess up...

Yes from a start the Max pulls slightly because of the way the torque curve is set up but at about 45 the TLs evens it out.

Wind noise, almost all 5th gen owners at www.maxima.org are complaining about wind noise near the rear window You must have tested a factory freak.


Thank goodness for the TSB that covers that wind noise. I would have ripped my hair off if I had to hear it any longer. Don't get me wrong, its not LOUD, its just there and that annoys me.

Yea, wind noise is terrible in the 5th gen. It's quiet when new, but after a few miles those back window seals break in and man, talking about noisy in the back seat.

Hey kapsig1 whats going on, its a few of us from the Lewisville/Flower Mound area. Mine is black stock, chorme stock wheels with a spoiler, what about yours. I cant aford any mods yet since I have a house note and the 2002 Max as well as the TLS payment.

I'm in Flower Mound also. I've been in Lewisville since 82 or so. I just move 5 miles in January to Flower Mound I haven't seen a black with chrome wheels yet. I have seen a black, and a couple of silvers also. Oh well, maybe I'll see you guys around.
