I have driven the new 3.5 Maxima with an automatic transmission. In terms of pure speed, the TLS is a "little" bit faster, but not much. I could feel the torque difference off the line, but after 2nd and 3rd gear the TLS is quicker. However, at this point I believe the Maxima to be of a better value. I was offered $500 under invoice to buy the car. At the same time, the features inside the cabin are a bit better than the TLS. While the quality wasn't quite there compared to Acura, it really did not bother me. The stereo in the Maxima is way better as well. For me, the main issue with the TLS is the blandness of the interior. I did not find this to be an issue with the maxima on any level. Actually, I found the interior looks of the maxima to be quite pleasing. I would have to say the Maxima handles the twisties a "little" better due to much better tires. As I am in the market for a new car... In conclusion I am leaning towards a Maxima for 3 reasons: Price, an appealing interior, and the stereo. I really hate the system installed in the TLS, and yes I know hate is a strong word!

Very interesting observation .How much will a fully loaded maxima SE cost you out the door ? I read somewhere $26,600 is possible . If correct , I think it is incredible bang for your buck .
