Angry TL-S Transmission Problem Data (from Posts)

I quickly scanned the Type-S forum for transmission replacements, and found the following:

These 11 members have had (or are having) their transmissions replaced:

TypeS
Redlined
Evan Eaton
ginelewicz
Danuary
oblio98
smelly
rmarin2
Nate579
FVFFC
Sleeperz6

These members have had wierd problems:

balasport
Vegas_Dave_65
bioyuki
CH-TLS
tdoh
Lauderdale TL

This list is far from complete, but shows that there is
definatly a serious problem with the 2002TL-S transmissions.
If there are this many people here in Tim's little world,
how many have there been in the outside world?

Where will it all end?

Jon,
I must have missed something (or forgotten). When did your tranny go out? What was your mileage?

22,354 no problem miles, then about 100 more with weirdness.

"Four Weeks?!" he said.

FOUR WEEKS!! Oh my goodness !, They're going to make you wait ONE MONTH! Oh man, I'm feeling the anguish on this one, that sucks!

Jon, I hope it comes in earlier than that for you

Wait, did I remember right? The loaner was some kind of Cavalier or something? You have to drive that for a month?

I have noticed that exact same problem that CH-TLS mentioned. The car does not coast. If I let off the gas the car feels like it has too much resistance and slows down very quickly almost like it is in a low gear. It just doesn't seem characteristic of an automatic. Is there anyone else out there that has this problem??

sajonf: i was wondering the same thing!!
i've noticed it too, when i let off the gas, it slows down quite a bit

i wonder if it is a problem, or just a normal characteristic of the car

I barely notice the effects you describe on my TL-S when taking my foot off the gas, but I do notice this. I'd say it's normal behavior.

A friend of mine was reading some stuff about Honda's transmissions and found out that on the CL/TL, the torque converter locks when cruising at highway speeds (better gas mileage?). When accelerating or going up a hill, I've found that the tranny will let the engine slip about 1000 RPM in 5th gear, as if there were a gear between 4th and 5th. This is probably the lock disengaging so the engine can get its torque up.

The same lock might be the cause of the "foot off the gas" behavior--it probably doesn't disengage since you want the engine to help break the car when slowing down.

quite the contrary.. i want to let the car "coast" rather than use the engine to brake

i think the car slow down too fast

This is characteristic of Honda's automatic trannies, I think. My 97 Accord LXV6 Auto slows down much more than the TL does!

I've gotten used to the coasting behavior. No biggie!

I bought my tl-s back on march 19, 2001. After about 290 miles the malfunction light lite up. the car drove fine, but i didn't push it since the car was still breaking in. The error code said it was a problem with one of the solinoids (sp?). It took them a week to replace the part (had to order the part).

Got the car back and all seemed fine till about 590 miles. The malfunction light came on again. Car still drove fine, but then again, I was still breaking the car in. The dealer pulled the code and it was the same code. This time they called in the engineers from the Torrance R&D site to help diagnose the problem. They had the car for a week and couldn't figure out what the problem was, so they ordered the complete transmission to be replaced.

One more week to order the new tranny, another week to get the new 2002 tranny jig to do the change. Three weeks and a few days total and i got the car back. no problems since and i have 8000 miles now.

The service rep told me his dealership has had one other tl-s with the same identical problem. The solution was the same fix. replace the transmission.

hth,
