TL-P vs. TL-S Tranny...

I just arrived at work after having gone through a full throttle 1-2 up shift in the '03 TL-P loaner the dealer gave me while having work done on my '02 TL-S (rotate & balance and hopefully new front rotors).

What a difference!!!! It shifted exactly as I would expect the TL-S to shift... I nice smooth, retarded spark shift that once second engaged... it picked up right where it left off w/ all the power. It felt faster than sh$t, w/o the snap your neck, chirp the tires quick shift I typically get of my TL-S.

I'm asking the rest of you TL-S owners about your shift quality... especially full throttle (as close to red-line as it'll go) 1-2 upshifts. My downshifts are good... and all other upshifts are good (except maybe lift throttle 2-3)... so I can't complain about those.

Unless I shift it manually and take it almost to the rev limiter in first... it drops out of V-TEC range for a time after shifting to second... which introduces a significant power drop. Do any (or all) of your's do that also? It's very annoying... and considering this TL-P didn't do it, I'm wondering if there is something else going on w/ my car I don't know about (software upgrade, who knows?).

I find it disturbing (as we all do) that I paid several thousand more than I would've for a TL-P for more power, handling and what not... but it doesn't seem the car can deliver it as nicely to the asphalt... so what's the point!? I think I do like the variable speed assist too... as opposed to the torque sensing assist.

I know... that's exactly what I'm getting at. Do your transmissions perform more like the TL-P I described... or more like my TL-S's?

eswartz: The TL-S & TL-P has the EXACT same tranny. The only difference would be age & possibly the ECU.

NO, the TL-S and TL-non-S trannys are different. They have different ratio 4th and 5th gears.

Hmmm....this is news to me. If that's the case...then I stand corrected.

P.S.
Would it be too much to ask for a link?

.. and scroll down towards the bottom and start reading buddy.

Edit* Yes, they do have slightly different gear ratios..but are still the same tranny. OBVIOUSLY..mostly 5-speeds are having tranny problems.

Am I stupid or are you stupid ?

If two trannys have different gear ratios, they are NOT the same tranny !! But they are using the same tranny casings, if that's your definition of "the same".

I almost got fooled by hearing people said same trannys for the TL-S and non-S until the day I went to Acura to have my tranny changed. I went to the parts department and read through the factory TL/TL-S service manuals while others were looking everywhere to find me a coutesy car. Then I compared the tranny specs, and realized that the 4th and 5th gears are different. I can't think of anything that's more accurate than the factory service manual, let alone a 2002 news release link.
