TL Love Reaffirmed
Well, the TL is in the shop as I write having the seat and window squeaks attended to. Minor, really, but I'd like 'em fixed just the same.
Anyway, they gave me an '00 Camry LE as a loaner, and here are my thoughts on that car as compared to the TL:
I used to drive a '97 Accord LX, which is the camry's biggest competitor. Man, I loved that Accord, and thought it was the smoothest thing going. I have always liked the Camry for the same reasons: smooth, solid, refined and reliable at a good price. Sometimes I wonder if the extra money on the TL was really worth it compared to an Accord/Camry/Maxima. Not any more...
I rode in a '99 Maxima the other day, and it was like a Yugo compared to the TL - rough, plasticky and just not nice at all. same for the camry, but even more so. Slow, cheap-looking inside, and more cheap touches than I care to list here. Engine was buzzy and slow, and the interior just plain sucks. There were some rattles, too, and this car had only 12,000 miles on it.
The seating position is terrible, and my legs hurt after a 20-minute drive. I couldn't believe how slow the thing was on the freeway, and it handled like a truck. That would be acceptable if it had a smooth, quiet ride, but it didn't.
Long story short: I love my TL even more than before, and I realized I need to stop bemoaning it's very short list of minor faults. It's worth every penny, and then some. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "the TL would still be a good buy at forty grand."
Anyone who is mad at their TL needs to go drive an Accord/Maxima/Camry/ES300/IS300 and realize how good the TL really is. Then go drive a 525i/GS300 and see that the TL is worth more than we spent!

Good story and all true, at least in my opinion. It's ironic that you got a Camry as a loaner, because when I got my TL, someone was already trying to get it so I had to burn time to see if they got turned down. So I decided to kill the time by test driving a Camry. Anyway, when I got in and drove the Camry I was already prepared to get out. Man, my 1976 Camaro's interior was nicer than that Camry's. Anyway, the person's credit failed, I already had a stash and I got the TL. I am glad I drove the Camry (in addition to several Accords) cause it let me know how lucky I was to get what I did. BTW, I was suprised that my TL was just $2000 - $3000 more than Accords/Camrys with similar mileage. Thank god too!

Out on parole and on best behavior...
I used to drive a camry. I hear you. The difference is huge. Just the whole feel, the handling, the control...I know they are different class of cars but the class is really noticeable. Don't get me wrong, I still have my share of rattles and seat squeaks but overall, I love my TL. It's gonna last me for awhile I hope.

Oh yeah, I also drove my buddy's '97 M3 automatic a while back, and after experiencing my TL the M3 was kinda cheap and buzzy inside. Still brakes and handles much better, but not nearly as smooth or nice inside.
He drove my TL, and was like, "man, this car is SMOOTH and FAST!" When I recently drove his M3, I first thought he had seriously ragged it out, 'cause it was so rough compared to my first impression. Nope, just not as smooth as the old TL.
