Tire Dilemma
Hey guys, I was looking at new tires to get rid of the stock michies that I have now and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I liked the Yokohama AVID H4S's and the Toyo Proxes TPT's anyone have either of these tires or know about them? I am looking to spend around 100-150ish a tire.

The car has 50,000 miles on it now & I purchased it new in late 1999.
The original tires are still on the car so they have almost 50K on them I have a set of winter tires that I use. They might have only 4K on them since I had them but its time to replace the stock Michelin tires that came on it. I have done alot of research the past 3 weeks. I called the Tire Rack & also used there website for tire test & reviews on the tires.
The YOKOHAMA AVID H4 looks to be the best tire if you stay with the stock wheels.
They are at a great price at $65 a tire & most reviews are very good. Most people say the tires really grip well & thats one thing the stock tires don't do well. The YOKO H4 tire is what I am going to order. from the tire rack very soon. I read the advertisements for the H4 & V4 tires in my car mags like Car & DRIVER,AUTOMOBILE it sounds like a good tire. In one of the adds the AVID H4 Tires are on the TL but check out the tire rack test & reviews for them. I am going with the AVID H4 in a few weeks I just called today checking prices for mounting, balance of the tires at shops that tire rack suggested.

soccerman,
I have bought the Yokohoma AVID H4s on tirerack for only 64 a tire!!!
Let me tell you they are much better than freaken stock Michellins and much cheaper.
For rought city driving they are great and they handle much better in the rain.
100-150 tire? if you want to spend that much you can get Michellin Sport or a nice Pirelli tire.

GoldTl, you buy a tire because it looks nice? or the rating and the quality it has?

yea guys....i just put the yoko hs4 on my 99 about 2/3000 miles ago, they are great tires
69 bucks a tire installed with lifetime rotations, balancing, etc, at discount tire
they grip well, ride well, turn in better and do better in rain than the stock michelins at about half the cost
if you stay with the stock wheels.....i recommend the yoko's

It came on the used 2001tl I just bought. I think they look nice, but I have no clue as to the durability.

I heard the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is a great tire but pricey. A friend's TL has these on stick 16's and he swears he corners on rails after putting them on. Too bad Michelin makes it unaffordable for most to afford their tires, even their crappy ones like the HX MXM4 is still overpriced.
Yokohamas have great reviews on their Avid H4/ V4 line. I'd stay away from Bridgestone as the quality have gone down over they years.
If I were you, I would use the stock 16's on winter with good snow rubbers on ( I guess you get your fair share of snow in OH too), and get nice 17's (or even Type-S/ TSX rims) and put on good summer/ all-season performance tires. You will find that the handling will dramatically improve.
Just my suggestion.
