Tipping help~

I'm getting service done on my car today, and used the dealers free shuttle service. Anyways, I'm getting picked back up at 5, and was just wondering if it's standard to tip the driver or not.

I've never heard of anyone tipping the dealer's courtesy driver. But I guess if you had tipped him in the a.m. then he'd definitely be on time for your afternoon pickup!

How is that ethical? Not to flame or anything, but I think it would be more ethical for their employers to pay them more $$ so that consumers don't have to compensate their lack of a justified higher salary that they aren't receiving.

There is no WAY I am tipping the jackasses in my dealers service department. Maybe the writer, casue hes pretty cool, but the tech are all boneheads.

I only tip people that do things that are complimentary... Like when my Honda dealer held on to my '92 accord for 3 weeks while i was waiting to decide to fix the tranny or not. i opted not to, and the service advisor just voided my ticket instead of charging me ass loads of $$$.... so i tiped him $40.

The reason i do it is because i used to be in that line of work... If i got tipped by a customer, and he ever had a problem in the future, i was 10 times more likley to be motivated to help him

That, and if i was the valet, i would hope for a tip too.

Ill tip my cable guy if he spends an extra 30 minutes of his time putting a wall jack exactaly where i want it...

I tip anyone and everyone that might be able to help me again in the future. It does make a difference at the valet, where you get seated in a restaurant and the kind of service that you get.

Not to bash you guys from Canada...
But I have a question - I used to be in the restaurant business. Why do Canadians come over to the US, tip 10% of the bill and think they ought to get extra special treatment ?? The average tip in the US is 15% for so-so service. Great service is 20-25%.

Well.. thats generalizing I guess.. and it's all a personal choice.
Idiots are everywhere, no matter where they come from..I use to work in the service industry also(airlines)...and boy, sometimes I would get an American tourist..(or anyone for that matter) and get the -Holyer than thou- attitude and wave $1 greenback at ya... I just smilled and politely declined the tip... no one will ever buy my dignity.
To answer your question .... I rarely see great service...therefore...

A tip (by my definition) is something that is awarded for excellant service or going above and beyond the call of duty. I hate this whole "tipping" scene, I go out to eat and the service might be subpar or even horrible, yet we are still compelled to leave them a tip, like it's expected. Why should I tip somebody that sucks at their job or doesn't really care about serving the customer? I'm not cheap by any means at all, and if I get the service I expect, the server gets awarded properly, if not, try harder next time buddy. I just hate how tips have gone from a nice gesture awarding hard work to an expected compensation, regardless of the quality of service provided.
