tinted turn signals just might work
I know that people like Maharaja and Bobatimez have put a chrome sticker over the front turn signals to simulate the cleared headlights effect without the hassle of diassembling them. I was bothered by the fact that they block the light completely though.
Today, I picked up a roll of 35% window tint from WalMart and cut out the shape of the reflector and stick it on the front turn signals. It wasn't dark enough, so I put on another layer. It looks pretty good during the daytime and looks almost like stock at nighttime, except that the light is a little dimmer. I tried it on the back turn signals too, and I think that those look much much nicer now. They make the ugly orange lens housing blend more with the red part of the housing. Lamp visibility is just slightly diminished. No one would even know the difference unless comparing them side by side. I probably will still clear my headlights sometime in the future, but I just wanted to try this out to see if it would work. However, the rear signals look so good that I don't forsee the need to get the cleared type-S tails.
I just wonder if the tint will withstand weather and the test of time. I might just go to a pro tint shop and ask them for their opinion.

Actually you can do one step better...if you really want something that will stay, permanently...then go get Night Shade...it's about 8 bucks and is what I am using to tint my rear lights...you can go as dark as you want (it's a spray)...

Now that I don't know...but yeah I think it's a better looking solution at the cost of being more permanent. I think it can be removed with solvent...but that means you'd have to get the 3M stuff to make your tails shiny again...not too big of a deal but more of a hassle than taking off tint. V.H.T. makes it I believe...go look it up

That's a great pic dude...I just don't see how it's tinted...I mean I can tell that the red is a little darker...but not a whole lot...was that your intention? Because I was thinking about tinting the ones on my black/black tls completely black...

ok, I decided that the front one's look kinda ugly cause they stand out a bit, so I removed them. But I still like the look of the rear signal tint. I didn't use any adhesive so it's just sticking on with static cling and a little bit of water. I'll try to post pics when I get a chance, but I don't know when that might be.
More likely than not, I'll probably go to a tint shop and have them redo the rear signals. They're sure to do a better job than an amateur like me.

pictures
I finally got around to taking some pictures of the tinted taillights. The first one is BEFORE, the other three are AFTER pictures. I still might get them professionally tinted at a later date, but they've survived the weather quite well thus far.

front signals nasty
Sorry, but I removed the tint off the front signals because I decided that it didn't look professional, so I don't have any pictures of the front one. I will probably just get my headlights cleared at some later date.
