TIMKEN Wheel Bearing

Hello...

will be replacing both front wheel bearings on my 02 Type-S and I bought the Timken bearings.
Not sure if I missed out on my readings about doing the job, or if the part ordered is wrong..
Can someone let me know which side of the bearing should be pressed into what side...
By looking at the Timken bearing, it seems that both sides are the same... both have no magnetic side and theres really no way to tell which goes where...

510050 is the right part number. One side "should" have a larger black band than the other. Larger black band goes to the outside while the pack seal side(metal color) goes towards the inside.

I know I'm not blind but I dont see any difference on either side... could it be that the abs sensor pickup point is on the axle shaft?

The picture shows both sides of the bearing

Correct, the tone ring is on the axle and the sensor is in the knuckle. Could be just an updated bearing design, so I'd say you are good to go installing it either way.

Confirmed... Thanks...

I also called Timken themselves and they verified that the part is correct and that it indeed does not have a magnetic side to it since the sensor picks up the signal from the axle. Thank you.

Replaced the bearings, but now I hear scraping sound

I was able to replace both front bearings... been driving the car for two weeks now with the new bearings... it was a pretty straightforward process but I did mess up one of the new bearings on my first try...
I forgot to support the race behind the hub when I was pressing it in so the bearing race separated... to my dismay, I ended up buying another bearing...

anyhow, after all said and done, I do notice one thing... each time i make tight left turn, say when parking, i can hear a scraping metal to metal sound like the rotor is scraping on something...
i did check the backing plate before I installed everything back to make sure that there is enough clearance from the rotor and there should be... one thing that I did not put back is the two screw retainer that holds the rotor to the hub... I had some trouble with the rotor/hub retainer screw getting stuck even after using an impact screw so ended up torching it and decided against screwing the rotor to the new hub to avoid this endeavor again should i need to replace rotors future jobs...

any idea what this scraping sound could be? did I get a bad bearing? I hope not cuz the ride is perfectly quiet on a straight line... is it time for a new rotor/pad? CV boots were good and the sound is not clicking... thoughts?

Good job man! Yeah, not a terribly difficult job, just time consuming. FWIW, I messed up a bearing once by doing the same thing.......live and learn I guess.

AFA the scraping goes, double check those dust shields. If it was one of the bearings I would think it would present issues at higher speeds or during hard cornering either left or right.

Thanks! Yeah, it was a fairly easy task... I haven't have the chance to remove the wheels but I've thought about the backing plate the first time I heard the scraping sound so I used a long screw driver and tried to push out the backing plate as much as I can with the wheels on but no difference. What puzzles me is that I can only hear the noise when making a tight left turn...

Could this be a rotor/brake issue?



Few pointers though:
1. The speed sensor will likely be stuck so if you don't want to spend extra for a new one, it is better to just unplug it from the harness and don't bother removing it from the knuckle. Easy task.
2. Put some anti-seize on the screw holding the rotor to the hub for ease of removal next time. In my case, I had to torch and melt the screw as it was rusted badly and the impact driver I used was no help.
3. Having a new hub definitely cuts helps with the repair time... you could source a cheap one from RockAuto and I;m sure from other stores as well..
