Timing marks don't line up

Hi guys. I'm trying to help my brother-in-law with the timing belt change (99 TL). We could not get the timing marks to line up. We could get them close but not dead on. Is it ok to proceed?
Thanks

Are you using the little notch under the gear, and not the long line on the pully? I saw a few posts that were lining up TDC wrong. Here someone posted actual directions from the acura service manual:

Thanks for the link marcelft. I can't see the pics at the moment, I'll check them out when I get home. I used the notch on the crank and lines on the cams. I wonder if the belt is stretched, it has 150k+ miles on it.

the tensioner should take up any belt stretch, if you are thinking it may have jumped a tooth

the 105 service is in the DIY sections, master list is 3rd item down- main gen2 list
gen3 has good pics and directions too

dont put it together unless everything is right- interferance engines!!!

Make sure there is absolutely no slack in the belt except on the side where it rolls over the tensioner. I assume it is the top left (or rear cam) that doesn't look perfectly lined up since that should be the last one you wrap around. Keep in mind that once you tighten the belt around the tensioner, and then fully tighten the tensioner bolts, it will pull the belt around a little more, which may look better at that point. That's the way my turned out. The mark on the top left (rear) cam was a little bit right of the alignment mark until I tightened everything down. After tightening, it looked much better.

the cams tend to move slightly when you take the belt off, iirc its noted in our DIY

make sure they are lined back up by gentle rotation as needed,,its a tick or two

Thanks for the advices guys. But it looks like we'll have to put the project on hold. The tensioner on the car looks nothing like the one that came in with the kit that I ordered...

The '99 is different than '00-'03.

This is a good reminder for me to check parts against each other when Im changing stuff. It's easy to just assume, but Ive had the same kind of stuff happen where I got wrong part, tried to install, and went nuts till I figured out it was wrong part.

Talked to the vendor yesterday, he'll send me the correct part asap and give me a little discount to offset the return shipping cost. It's a little inconvenient but all good. Kudo to him for trying to make it right.
Btw, what's up with the one year redesign deal?
