Timing Belt

How do you know when you its time to change your timing belt? i got my car at 82XXX miles and im currently at 89XXX. not sure what the previous owner had done to car. but from when i got it to now i hear a kind of hissing sound or something of that sort from the timing belt location. just wondering if you guys can shine some light on the situation thanks.

you proably be alright at 105k (first time it needs to be done) by what it says in the manual, but by that time they do have quite a bit of stretch in them, so it does not hurt it to be done early

btw:mine was done at 90K

105k or 7years. which ever come first. mine will be done at 70k and doing it on a spare engine with 82k. not gonna save a few hundred bucks and not know if it will snap under the power

Mileage is less important than age. With these cars getting up there in age now i would look at doing it by the 7 year mark more so than the 105k miles

GETTING MINE DONE WEDNESDAY(dropping off tomorrow night)..w00t

finally! talk about waiting long. im at 151k miles on a '03 & never been done.
watch the shit go out tomorrow omw to work.

at least i found a local shop that only carges 700 for it, instead of dealer 900-1000.
they only work on acura/hondas too. so i feel fairly comfortable bringing it to them.

yeah man i went to 170,000 on my 03 TL-S which was one of the stupidest decisions in my life. I made it no problems thank God and after we pulled it the belt looked fine. But that is such a gamble. I would never, ever recommend anyone do that. do the 105,000 or 7 yrs.

reason was is i didnt want to pay the grand at acura and put it off once 105,000 ticked by. and I got too lazy to find a good shop. and i drive a lot of miles so 170,000 got there quick. luckily i became freinds with a good mechanic and he hooked me up and we did a lot of stuff aside from the timing belt.

Its well worth it, even the $1000 looking back on it, but you can find a good shop to do it between $500-900, depending on how much stuff you replace, such as the hydrolic tensionor and such

This is from the other timing belt thread

From the pamphlet I picked up at the dealership it suggests:

100 000 km if vehicle is regularly driven in a very low temperature (under -29 C)

168 000 km replace timing belt (normal conditions)
I even called my local dealership and they confirmed this as well.

I just got mine done yesterday for the first time. I have a 99 TL with over 193k on the motor. They gave me the old timing belt per my request and it was a little glazed, but not signs of dry rot or cracking at all and the belt had plenty of flexibility. Very surprised!!!! The belt could have easily gone another 50-75k miles. This may be a rare case, but I drive my car through all types of elements and drive it hard.

you are speaking metric while the rest of the thread is talking about american miles- in the end both books call for the same thing

sbus- check it again with a magnifying glass- bet there is wear you cant see on casual inspection
I know for fact a 90 integra will go 175 kmiles on the timing belt-with predicatable results 1 mile after that (oops)

iirc Kris went 200 on his belt-

Conversion-

100 000 km - 62 140 miles
168 000 km - 104 395 miles

193,000 miles not kilometers. I looked at the belt very closely. I pulled it hard, twisted it, picked at it. It's still in very solid shape. It's flexible, no noticebale cracks (haven't used a magnifying glass though). I'm just surpirsed that after almost 11 years and 193k the belt held up that well. anyhow now I wished I spent that money on a new stereo as mine shit the bed. I gues the timing belt is tougher than Acura's Blose headunit. Well now I have the excuse to get a new system. I just picked up a sweet Pioneer Premier HU, next are speakers, 2 amps and a sub.

the down side of pressing your luck is total engine destruction when a tensioner fails--the belt was good but....

rck5-- that hissing noise might be the ac belt tensioner, those go out- mine was noisy at 45kmiles and finally really loud and replaced at 80
part cost about 100 for complete unit and 1-1.5 hours to install
Im sure someone here can do it in 20 minutes~
