I traded in a '99 civic Si that had a couple big dents. They gave me $14,000 for it which was fair, since they wouldn't budge on the price of the TL-S.

What's a good NJ trade in value for TLS w/nav at MSRP for TL 99 w/nav 35.5k miles?
I bought my 99 at MSRP 12/98. I would assume that once TLS is no longer selling at MSRP my trade-in would also go down relative in value.

Exclamation

I traded my *6 months old, 4500 miles* 2001 TL (no navi, black/black) for the 2002 TL-S (w/navi, black/black)last week.

It took 2 1/2 days of negotiating with the salesman. Even so, Pohanka Acura (Chantilly, Virginia) would not do better than MSRP of $33,710 but I did do better than 'blue book' on my trade--$26,500. (I did buy the '01 there also afterall, so it was the least they could do!) I also did get them to add mud flaps ($110) for 'free.'

I was obviously in love with the TL-S (and navi) so the salesman saw right through my feeble negotiation attempts.

After the initial shock of losing money on a perfectly good '01, and the scorn of friends and family (even some weird looks from other Acura salespeople), I must say--all that fades away when I'm in that car! It's just a completely different feeling driving the Type S and with all the other goodies they added for '02. Even friends that have been in it can see why I traded the '01.

Yes, I lost money. But that's what it's there for and I love, love it, love it!

(By the way, Pohanka has my 'old' '01 for the asking price of $26,424. It's in perfect condition and never smoked in, plenty left on the original warranty and it already has the mud flaps-if you like those. See, they did lose money! That's what I keep telling myself.)

So--BE FIRM, DON'T FALL IN LOVE, AND DON'T FALL FOR THEIR 'but we can't negotiate with so many 2001s still left' ROUTINE. Do better than I did because you can't go wrong with the car itself.

Cheers

Very tempting! I have not driven TLS yet, afraid to do something impulsive like you once I drove it.

What's the tax consequences for the trade-in? Is that deducted from the purchase price? Say purchase is $33k and trade in is $20k, I pay only taxes on $13k? Or do I pay taxes on the whole $33k, and then sales tax on my $20k?!

I probably wouldn't trade in a 2001 myself, but I can use the speedier DVD nav. compared to my HD nav. Then I should wait for the 2003 redesign. Maybe next year they'll have more goodies like rear backup sensor, electric window shade, moonroof visor as standard or free oil change for the duration of warranty!

traded in a 99 maxima gxe, which was bought for 19k in 99, and got 15.5k for trade in... in my experience, when dealing with brand new models, you have to leverage the trade in, because they cant knock off too much off the sticker...

Yes you can negotiate. Picked up mine last night for $31,230 (w/navi). The dealer still had plenty of '01s. Just pretend you really could wait or even, horrors, buy another car.

tax wise u pay only on the remaining balance (which is minus the trade-in). so if you get 15k trade-in for a 31k car, u only pay taxes on the remaining 16k, thats why its a lot better to negotiate with the trade-in price instead of the purchase price, and also when u sell it, u can quote a higher "buy" price... although that probably wont do too much =)

That might fool unsuspecting relatives. It's how TL 98 is worth now. They paid more than TL 99+ for less stuff. I paid MSRP but now it's selling invoice. I am sure end of the year TL Type S will have good deals when the rumor of 2004 features start to surfice.

Traded in a '93 Ford Taurus SHO, 134,000 miles. The dealer negotiated the trade-in, coming up $1,000 from his starting point to a very fair price for a tough to unload car. The 2002 TS-S price was MSRP. I felt good about the deal, overall.

Cool

Trading in my Ranger...(see sig). Getting 8K$ for it and all of my dealer options put on for free. Although, you would have to see my Ranger...looks brand new, always garaged, never smoked in, great shape! I could probably sell it outright for 9500 or so. This link has pix of it... http://albums.photopoint.com/j/Album...a=12281549&f=0
