Third Brake Light Mod

Decided to take my "Courtesy Light" Mod and apply it to my third brake light, let me know what you guys think. Oh yeah please ignore the filthy car, havn't had time to wash it this week.

I also replaced the baige speaker material on the sub with black, which I will be posting pics of soon, and am planning on replacing the coverings on the doors as well.

Custom door sills are done and installed with exception of TL graphics which I still have to get made, when those are finished, I'll post some pics.

How-To: Custom Third Brake Light

Do a search for "Custom Courtesy Light Mod" (my thread also) and apply the same idea/principles to the lens on the third brake light. To remove the sub-cover/third brake light: open your trunk, look underneath and you will see two wire harnesses going into the third brake light area, turn each 1/4 counter-clock wise, pull out and let hang. Next, get in the back seat and remove the small cover above the rear center seat with a flat screwdriver or knife. Unbolt the metal piece and set aside. Then take the flat screwdriver/knife and pry up the sub cover, it should come off pretty easily. You will have to remove two screws and a few clips to separate the lens from the cover. MAKE SURE YOU UNHOOK THE BULBS BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS!! Use 3.2 TL Graphic from other thread to act as a mask for the lens. Apply decal, spray paint matte black (8 coats), then remove decal. Hope this helps. Remember, read that other thread first, and then you will further understand this one.

Definitely great looking. Good job.

Question, though. Does NJ have annual vehicle inspections? If so, think it'll be a problem? High Mounted Third Brake Lights are supposed to have a certain number of square inches of display. The masked off area reduces that. With your spoiler, you're probably OK, but for those without a second brake light in a spoiler it's something to be aware of.

My inspection sticker is goood until 06 (got it in 04). That WAS something I took into consideration, but like you said, I have the spoiler light, so I figured that would be enough. Good thinking though, someone without a spoiler might have a problem.

They are factory replacement bulbs, you can get them at Pep Boys for like 4 bucks. They are number 154 or 194 I think. Right now I have LEDs in there I got off of (superbrightleds.com) but I'm not so sure I like them because they are to concentrated on the center. But to answer your question, just go to your local auto parts store and get number 194 bulbs.

I used 1/8" tape. It's that stuff that painters use to draw flames on cars prior to painting. I'm sure you can use masking tape and just cut it down though. There are little squares that make up the lens (you will know what I am talking about when you see it), and I just crated two lines that were the same width as the squares.

If you have an RSX then yes I am sure the brake light or caliper decal would work.

Good job. As far as inspection goes, just disconnect the bulbs since you have your spoiler light. As long as that works, they can't say anything and won't bother to check since most cars with spoilers don't have both brake lights come on (window & spoiler)
