Question Thinking about getting a TL Type S

I have had my 93 Black Acura Legend Sedan for over three years and I have really enjoyed it. In fact my family has owned numerous Acuras over the years. I'm thinking about getting another car and I wouldn't mind getting another Acura. I really like the look of the TL and I especially wouldn't mind paying a little more to get the Type S.

What kinds of problems (if any) do the TLs have (I think I've seen some posts regarding different sounds and squeaks people have experienced)?

I enjoyed fixing up my Legend, however, I mainly modified appearance as opposed to engine stuff. I like the look of clear corners, clear bumper lights, and the white gauge cluster. I saw that there are similar products available for the TL. Where are some good links to get these products at reasonable prices?

What's a good price for a TL type S?

The only problems I faced are some paint quality (painted over dust) and squeaks (seatbelt and sunroof) inside the cabin where is can be fixed. Besides that, it's a great car. I got mine on Long Island, NY for $32,400 (6/01). The price really depends on where you are located.

Well, my 6000-mile TLS has given me plenty of driving pleasure. The problems I had were:
  • Broken Navi control unit (fixed under warranty).
  • Squeaky seat belt hinge (fixed with WD40).
  • Squeaky driver's door (fixed by adjusting door striker).
  • Clicking driver's seat base (replaced driver's seat base under warranty).
  • Cut in driver's seat leather (replaced under warranty).
  • Paint as soft as a baby's bottom (what to do?).
  • Very soft thunking sound in B-pillar (not fixed yet).
All the problems that I have encountered have been fixed (except for that last one) rather painlessly. I have yet to have a powertrain problem like some people have (knock on wood).

4700 miles in a few short months (3) and so far so good. No problems. The more you drive it, the more you will like it. For the money, it beats all. You shouldn't have to pay more than $32 tops for the Type S.

The only thing I see is the paint being very soft, easy to scratch or ship. I'm not very upset, as I did go on a interstate trip, and my car before this (infiniti) was the same. Most new cars have this paint maybe except some of the GM stuff, but then all their interior are bad.

I have about 21,000 miles on my TLS and I've had all the minor squeaks and rattles everyone else has reported. I also had a water leak coming in from behind the driver's side of the dash (I've seen one other person on this board report this problem ). I also had the transmission replaced at 9000 miles. At the time, Acura hadn't seen (so they say) this problem. Since then, 2 or 3 other people have reported having their transmissions replaced at about the same mileage and one stated the transmissions were on back-order (possibly indicating a widespread problem). Finally, I now have warped rotors which I will hopefully have fixed by the end of the week. I think 2 or 3 other people on the board have reported this same problem within the last 2 weeks.

I love my car but have been very disappointed with it's reliability and overall build quality. I have a 94 Legend w/ 180000 miles on it and it's NEVER had any problems, period.

Wow RedLined, you scare me. You might have that 1 out of 10,000. That is how I felt with my infiniti, everythng went wrong, and everything was a first to dealers, and not common with others on the Nissan boards. So are most of these noises coming from where? Easy to fix?

Sounds like you wouldn't buy the TL if you could have another chance?

Interior noise problems are common on most if not all cars - especially over time. I've had mine for 4 months (about 4400 miles). The sunroof made noise (fixed with armor all).

I bought it in central Florida for 31,600 (it's a Diamond White Pearl, parchment interior, type S, with navi)

So far I LOVE the car! I highly recommend it. (but these transmission posts are scaring me a little)

count me in for the warp rotors but transmissions still good at 11k

I've got 9993 miles on my TL-S and have had it since April 24th. I have not had any rattles or squeaking sounds at all and the trans and brakes are fine.

I have had the window and seat belt recalls done under warranty as well as some minor fit and finish issues resolved.

The only problem I have is with the paint. Two paint chips aside, several bugs have made some small orange stains on my front bumper.

Overall, I still love my car.

You should be able to get an S w/o nav for low/mid $29K to $30K (+tax/misc) depending on the area you live in. With nav is about $1500 +/- higher from what has been posted here.
