IMHO buying a car 129k on the clock is asking for trouble. I know our engines can go over 200+ with no issues, but you're basically buying a car thats been "used up" god knows Honda doesnt want to build cars that last 20 years because then they'll have nobody to sell new ones too.

5000 would b ok... and you have to have some sort of proof that the service has been done on it.... plus you gotta factor in the cost of "inspection" which Im assuming is the same as registration or smog check?

If he doesnt go 5 then dont do it.... my .02

how is the interior, exterior, paint (around sunroof, trunk, hood) inspect the crap out of the car, and find any flaw you can to lower the price more...once again my .02

I just bought a 98 passat 1.8t with 160k for 2,000

there is a lot that you can buy for cheap. It takes some work to get them perfect, but its not a bad deal

The 99s still have transmission problems. While not as bad as the 5 speeds, they are still pretty prone to failure. Get it inspected first to make sure you won't have to replace anything else major.

u must mean buying a "ford or gm" with 129k on the clock is asking for trouble

one of my neighbors has a light blue 1976 1.8l honda accord w/ 346,000miles on it and it runs just fine, he drives it every other day. no rust, no dents, origional paint, origional engine, and the interior is in shape, its maint free. That car is 32 years old.

the 00-03 have a bad tranny rap sheet. so the 99 even though 1 years older should be a little better. I got my 99 since new and now with 181k still going strong. only thing I ever replace was the EGR valve & canister, spark plugs and coils, O2 sensor and motor mounts. everything else is original even the belts! just spray belt dressing on 1 or 2 a year usually in late fall and winter cause of the cold!

$5000 would be a fair price for this TL, if the owner can provide it's complete documented service history. It would be to your advantage to have the car fully evaluated and inspected by a competent mechanic of your choice at his expense. The T-belt service is a big plus, along with the navi option and the older more durable 4 speed AT. Hopefully this car has been previously well maintained and still appears to be in above average condition. These cars were "Honda's" best and will provide excellent overall value for several more years if properly kept up.

Belt dressing products may have some value ?, but don't expect any of them to rejuvenate worn belts which have been subjected to years of hard work under various temperture extremes, along with continous operating pressure being exerted upon them to drive your baby's key mechanical components. More times than enough, when these belts attain a certain age.........they will ultimately be the weak link. Therefore, a word to the wise.....sometimes an ounce of prevention pays huge dividends in what may be costly side effects of neglecting normal scheduled belt replacement, usually done along with the "T-belt". The costs are nominal, due to labor duplication at that time of a $1000 job, the accessory belts are like peanuts. Don't monkey around !

5K would not be a bad price. I just purchased my 99 for 5K it has 150,000 miles on it and it also had tranny replaced and timing belt/water pump replaced. I love it !

Well, while I agree that buying an American car with over 100k+ is much more risky (more like guaranteed to blow up on you) than a Honda that doesnt mean our cars are impervious to wear and tear. Maintenance goes a long way, and when you buy a car used, unless the guy gives you every receipt for every thing he did to the car, you really cant know how it was treated. And that says nothing about how it was driven, noone will ever tell you they ripped the shit out their car every time they got in it if they wanted to sell it to you.

Also wear and tear parts are big issue as well. A 76 accord is a much simpler car than our TL's are, and there plenty of electronics related parts that are affected by wear and tear. Yes I agree that our engines are very very very reliable mechanically over time, but that doesn't meant that sensors wont fail, or suspension components wont give out.

All i'm trying to say is that even with a super thorough inspection you can still miss potential problems that will hit your wallet hard.

no offense but the acura TL has been driven hard by everyone ive known. If the current owner looks like or has a Lead foot, i'd assume the car is broken in and probably driven hard on a dialy basis. you should factor in maintenance costs involved with price negotiation.

test drive it slow and fast to feel how it shifts between gears, especially between 2nd and 3rd. My 02 TL-S has 100800 miles on it and Ive had it since 92000 miles. Ive spent a little over $2000 to replace all the suspension bushings, engine mounts, fluids, rear brake rotors, brake pads and install a new wood steeringwheel. All in all its been a great car and i drive to work twice a week in the city with it. The previous owner was an older guy in this late 50s but he used it on interstate sales calls so the mileage averaged 20k a year. You can still get a gem of a car with high mileage. Just remember you are trying to buy a reliable car and hopefully not someone else's problems (especially when the price is too low)... a tell tale sign.

good luck

I bought my 99TL with Navi in Sept. of 2005. I was nearly 6 years old (manf. date of 11/98) It had 38k on it and I paid $11,000. Since I sold the guys home that sold me the car I knew it was well cared for. His home was meticulously cared for as was the car. He had every and I mean every receipt for everything that was ever done to the car maintenance wise. Even copies of the notes he wrote to the Acura garage when he took it in for maintenance. Acura replaced the Rotors and pads all the way round at 30k so the brakes were good to go. They also did the ignition and entry system recall. Only issues with the car have been the rear view mirror doesn't dim now and one bad tie rod end on the steering rack that I had replaced. It's due for a timing belt since it has 84K on it now and is 9 and 1/2 years old. The front brake rotors are starting to warp so I'll be replacing them with Brembo Blanks soon. I have done the EGR cleaning myself, new plugs and tranny fluid change every 10k. The car looks, runs perfect and drives great. I still get compliments from everyone that rides in it as to how quiet and nice it is. Several of my friends have said that they too would like to have a TL. I couldn't be happier with mine. I've opened it up a few times to feel the V TEC kick in but drive very conservatively. I couldn't be happier with my TL. It's been a great car so far considering it will turn 10 years old in Nov. 2008. 23/24 mpg. in mixed driving here in the mountains of NC. bout 29-31 on the highway. If I were you=take it to a garage and have them check out the front end, engine for leaks and have them look for any damage underneath the car. Also drive a few TL's at car lots and you will be able to compare them to this car. My 2 cents.

Back in 2005 with 38K Wholesale value was over $12,000. Wasn't too much. With 38k it was mint. Was a great deal. Find a 5 yr old Accord with that kinda mileage on it today that's 5 yrs. old and see what you woud pay for it.
