Temperature inside center console

Temperature inside center console
It gets pretty warm in the center console and underneath the cup holder. I figure that's an attempt to keep drinks warm in the winter and cold in the summer (when A/C is blowing into the back vents). Why the center storage compartment needs heat beats me, though. The stuff I put in there gets pretty warm, as well as my entire console. Even the wood trim gets pretty warm.
Is this normal behavior? If so, do you think this was intentional ("look! keeps your cold drinks cold, your hot drinks hot, AND acts like a fridge or stove", a salesperson might say) or just bad design?

I think it's because of the air runs through the center console to the rear vents. That's why it's hot in the winter (heat is on) and cold in the summer (AC). I'm sure they're not actually heating and cooling the drink holder.

FWIW, I have also noticed that of the two rear vents that the one on the driver's side blows noticably hotter air than the rear passesnger side vent. This leads me to believe that perhaps the exhaust under the car has something to do with the heat in the console area.
Anyone else have hotter air on the driver's-rear side?
