Temperature gauge faulty

I’m having a issue with my temp gauge. When I start the car the temp gauge starts below/at the C on the gauge and gradually climbs up s little below the half way mark. But the other day my car over heated and was spitting out anti freeze out of the reserve tank and the gauge never went up. I was thinking that it was my thermostat would be my problem so I bought one and was going to install tomorrow but after reading g some threads I’m thinking it may be the temp sensor or gauge itself. Any help would be greatly appricated. Thank you

Which year, model, and how many miles. Have you pressure tested the cooling system, for leaks? Temperature sensor, and temp gauge failures are somewhat rare. If, the engine coolant was low, initially, the sensor, and gauge MAY NOT, work properly.

It’s a 2003 Acura TL with 162,000 miles. I have not pressure tested the cooling system. I’m going to see if I get it tested for leaks tomorrow. It could’ve been low on coolant. Since I refilled it, I haven’t lost any.

Like i said, temp. sensor, and gauge issues on our cars. are unusual. My 03 TLS has 239K. I, nor have several acquaintances, driving 2G TLs, for years, experienced a sensor, or gauge problem! When you have the system checked, make sure to ask your Tech, to BLEED the system PROPERLY, in accordance with the Acura manual! Air in the system, on our cars, may not only affect the gauge reading, it may also affect the engine idle..

Does the 2003 Acura TL have a bleeder screw by thermostat? Also when the car is at engine temp should the outgoing hose from the rad be extremely hot? Mine is so hot I can barely keep my hand on it?

Bleeder screw is on the back of the block. The hose would obviously be pretty hot...

There is no coolant bleeder screw on the TL. That is the engine block coolant drain plug. Bleeder screws are usually on top or near the top of and engine.

So today I was able to bleed the system. Wasn’t much air in there. My gauge stays below the middle line on temp gauge. Not sure if it’s suppose to be at the middle line or it’s ok to be below? I’m going to be checking the coolant temp sensor tomorrow and make sure I installed the thermostat with the pin up. I’ll post what I find tomorrow

Mine. normally rests one, or two lines below mid-range, depending on ambient. Used to run one or two lines, above mid-range, until I had the a/c condenser, and radiator fins, professionally cleaned.

Ah, that's right. It's just a drain plug.

A tick below half way is normal.
