TCS and Check engine lights came on at the same time
Everyone,
Has anyone every had their TCS and Check Engine lights come on at the same time and stay on? It just started happening today, and has been staying on everytime I re-start the car on different trips throughout the day.
I checked it out in the manual, but it does not really get to in depth about what it might be.

Get the codes read. There's a good possibility it's the tranny - but it could be something else as well.
Also - it it's the tranny and those lights go on, your car may go into limp mode (where you have 2nd gear only). Like the prior poster wrote - is it shifting properly?

I love how no matter what the symptom, there are always a few people who jump in and scream transmission.
EXAMPLE:
Post 1: Shit guys my passenger side HID light is flickering and the radio won't accept the code.
Reply: Looks like your tranny just bit the dust.

This happened to my '99 TL, the TCS and Check Engine lights came on, So I took it to my mechanic and he said that what the problem was the clutch master cylinder went bad. but at the same time so did my EGR valve, so it could be one of those two.

ive had both lights come on twice before:
1st time: transmission shit the bed
2nd time: system running too lean (ended up being bad gas)
so get the codes read and let us know, could be something stupid like loose gas cap, or the worst - tranny gone
good luck

I got the stealership to fix my knock sensor. They said that it wasnt their fault the knock sensor went bad cause of the rats. (turned out to be true, they showed me the chewed wires) but i got them to pay 1/2 of the cost since i got the car 2 weeks ago.

Good for you dude...as for me, i'll be picking up my car at the dealership. They did the tranny for free too(cos of warranty of course)..so im excited again to have my car back tomorrow.

my cel went on and i got it checked and it was a EGR insufficient flow. is it ok to drive with that or should i get it fixed. the dealer is trying to charge me like hundreds of dollars to fix that

you can continue to drive without serious worries....but they dont build monitoring systems into the car for nothing. plus it will only hurt your emissions/MPG in the end. i went a couple months before i decided to clean my EGR port, although i dont consider that to be sound advice - so dont take it.
as long as your at least slightly mechanically inclined, you can fix it yourself for free. do a search for EGR/throttle body spacers and you'll find the thread on how to do it. shouldnt take you more than a couple hours even if you dont have a clue what your doing to start out with.

no. they will try and try to get you to think otherwise. their story is to ream out the port to make room for a small metal sleeve insert that they claim will ease future maintenance and save time... it literally only saves future maintenance time by about 1 minute...but then you need the xtra sleeve that the dealer wont have in stock anyway -- sooooo.....you end up paying more and waiting around for the sleeve.
once again: you can do it yourself for free.

Check Engine Light and TCS Light
I just came back from the dealership. I took the car there for my elderly mother. 2003 automatic TL. They said it needs and idle control valve. Parts and labour about 600. Scam?? Thx!

Dude make your own thread for this kind of stuff, instead of rezzing a 6 year old one.
Total scam btw. The part brand new OEM is about $150, and the labor should be 1 hour MAX. So you're looking at a total of about $250, and that's pretty generous.
You could also just do it yourself in 20 minutes if you've worked on your car at all.

Welcome Aprilricki !!!
Yeah, as Karanx7 previously posted.....if you're mechanically inclined and have some basic hand tools, ya can try removing the IAC valve and clean it. Many times this will work just fine. Check out the 2nd Gen's "DIY" sticky for more info on the procedure.

I think 600.00 is way to much to pay for the iacv valve. 250.00 sounds very reasonable. Shop around since you know what the problem is. Some independent shops in your neighborhood is a good start.

Yeah, check with a local shop for better prices. They may be able to either clean the valve or replace it for much less than the dealership.
Maybe check around for the best online price for the valve and then take it to your mechanic for installation.
