Question Tax

Do you have to pay tax on cars if you buy from out of state? Also how do I find out what the tax rate is for different state? I was curious about Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Thanks,

If you want to register your car, you have to pay tax on it.
If you buy the car out of state, you pay the tax in the state you register it.
Not sure where you get the info on the rate but you gotta pay tax. I know that.

I believe that you pay the tax of the State where you register your car. Purchase State is irrelevant.

Cool

You pay taxes according to where you live or where you register your car. It doesn't matter what state you purchase in. In Chicago, the sales tax on a car is 8.75%. The suburbs either go by their respective county tax or by the state tax.

I thought you pay the tax based on where you live. When I purchased my car new in southern Westchester, I paid the tax rate that my town has (6.75%), not what the tax rate is where the dealer was located (7.25% or 7.75%, can't remember).....

Thanks guys. I guess buying cars are not like buying computers.

I'm negotiating with a dealer out of state so I was curious.
