Question Sunroof Motor

I searched other threads and could not find a specific problem like mine, so here goes......

I have a '99 TL with just over 100K miles. The sunroof is very difficult to open and close and it sounds like the motor is very strained when doing the work. It sometimes stops completely half way through opening and closing and I have to force it by hand the rest of the way. I have tried lubricating the tracks with silicone grease, as the dealer suggested and it only worked for a short amount of time.

I am wondering, does the sunroof motor need to be lubricated as well and if so, how do you get to it? I am hoping that it doesn't require the removal of the headliner!

Thanks in advance for any help!

yes you need to clean the rails and lube them with white lithium grease.

This actually happened to me and I thought it was the motor as well. It turned out there was a piece of metal stripping that had come loose and was getting stuck between the cloth cover of the ceiling and the glass. Open it up all the way and look around for anything loose...or any screws missing. Sorry I can't give you more detail - it's been awhile since it happened and I'm not by the car right now.

Good luck.
