Unhappy Sudden Death, very sad day!!

Well my time has come, after a great run, tranny #1 is leaving me I read a lot of threads and mine was weird, I guess I call it sudden death. It started yesterday and it almost left me on the road today. It was slipping so bad that I barely made it to the dealer. Great support from Acura of Orange Park here in Jacksonville FL. I called them and right away I was told if you get stuck on the road let us know and we will send a tow truck to get you. My girl never let me down to the end, she made it to the dealer like a good trooper.
They gave me an '06 TSX that was waiting for me when I arrived and told me it will take about a week.
Will keep you post it when I get her back.

The future looks grim for the except-for-the-tranny wonderful 2G TLs. As much as I love everything, the looks, comfort, and power of the TL-S (it is one of my favorite cars for interior and exterior design) it just can't be trusted past 100k.

Is your O3 considered a late build model?? I mean does your vin fall into the 100k tranny warranty..........I wonder when this happens to me if the dealership will give me trouble since my 03 is supposed to have the "good" tranny..........but we all know that is BS

Mine was made in May '03, just about middle year. It was part of the VIN recall and it also had the oil jet kit put on. As far as problems, I have none with the dealer, they took her and told me I'll keep you post it but it will take about a week. I do have very good relations with them and never had problems when it come to service.

Well it's better to have it fail at 88,000 miles instead of 108,000 miles. ;-)

great, thanks for the info................glad it worked out hope they fix it right the first time

One other question since you had the oil jet installed, did you ask them why the failure happened?? (was it the 3rd gear clutch pack)

Thanks, I don't have any details of what exactly failed since I just dropped her this afternoon but I can tell you it was slipping in all the gears. Let's put it this way, I was doing 60mph in 5th gear (SS) on my way to the dealer on the highway and my rpm's were running around 2100. Normally I can do a little over 80mph in 5th gear with rpms around 2000. That's how much it was slipping.

In my TL 80 puts you about 2250-2500rpm. 60 is about 1750.

^^

For the Type-S in 5th gear cruise:

70 MPH = 2000 RPM
80 MPH = 2250 RPM
90 MPH = 2500 RPM
100 MPH = 3000 RPM

When my tranny displayed bad symptoms, the shift from 2nd to 3rd would slip entirely, and I would have to skip to 4th gear to continue driving.

I never use 5th gear either. Of course my 1999 TL doesn't even have a 5th gear so that's a factor.

Update!

A comment before update, I don't understand why some of you are not using 5th gear. This saves gas.

Anyway, I received a call from the dealer saying they contacted Honda and that based on my VIN and the amount of miles on my car that it was outside the warranty, my dealer told them that I was a good customer and they needed to fix my tranny, they aggreed to do it under the goodwill program but I needed to participate, meaning I have to come up with $1000 if I want it 3yr/36K miles warranty. They said that it was too much and they needed to do better, they told him then $500 (all this is towards the labor) at this point I told him that Honda needed to pay for everything, period. He said ok but I'm not going to have warranty. I told him fine (I was at work) and he said I'm going to order the tranny.
I called Honda and what I get is 12mo/12k miles and that's it.

Will see how it goes.

I thought they might try to screw you in the end...... Dont pay anything, talk to corporate if you have to.Hopefully this tranny has all the updated parts and lasts awhile.I still haven't heard any of the Updated Trannies failing, but considering the track record who really knows. Good Luck

Its really sad,I love my 03 type -s but once I get near 50k miles(IF i ever do).I am selling with no regret and stepping into an 07 type S

Maybe, but when you hear the actual job could cost $4500 (at Acura dealer and replacing all, not just a bad part inside tranny) it makes you think it's time to think about a future car.
This is not the way I would like to go because mine worked fine 97% of the time so that's good this days in any league.

I got my baby back today and she is as smooth as butter again. They ended up changing the front engine mount, I suspected that from before. I'll see tomorrow morning when I have a longer drive to do. For now, I'm .

I had the same feeling as you when I received my car after the tranny and 2 motor mounts were replaced. It felt like a new car all over again

Yes it is The Buckman Bridge.

I had the same feeling as you when I received my car after the tranny and 2 motor mounts were replaced. It felt like a new car all over again
I ended up paying for the engine mount $240.00 installed. It was more if I do it later do to labor so I decided to do it now plus I wanted all smooth like new and avoid later issues.

Nice clip, she pulls very nice, I hope she gets fixed fast for you.

The dealer was not the one giving me a hard time, it was Honda to the dealer and it was because if I wanted warranty of 3yr 36k I needed to pay $500.00. After talking to Honda directly, they said I have 12mo 12k warranty.

So for $500 you get a 3yr/36k mile warranty and you passed and took a 12month/12k mile warranty? Personally I think $500 is cheap for the added 2 YEARS of warranty.

Right, but with all this, as much as I like her, I don't think I'll keep her too long. Will see what the next couple of years bring. A lot of choices out there and getting better. Not that I like the payments but will see.

Congrats! I hope the new one lasts for the life of the car
Thanks, that's what I'm hoping for too. So far so good but I have to reset the ECU (by disconnecting the battery) darn solenoid makes the idle jumpy but is back to normal now.
