So a few days ago my 2000 TL-P started making a strange vibration from under the hood. I could tell that it was coming near the right side of the engine. It only happens when I step on the gas as the engine revs up. Once a steady rpm is reached, the vibration stops. After popping the hood and revving the engine with my head under there, it seems the problem is coming from the accessory belt tensioner. Not the pulley, but the tensioner itself. I can see it vibrate as the belt applies tension during revving and then it stops when the constant rpm is reached. Does this mean that my tensioner is about to give me all kinds of problems? Any ideas? Just replace it and go on? The red markings indicate where I can see the vibration taking place during revving.

 

mine went out- accessory/ac belt tensioner assembly, 85 dollars at local import parts store
you want the complete assembly not the pulley- its the tensioner thats failed

It is supposed to keep a constant tension on the belt thru the rpm range
If it sounds like a V8 under the hood- thats the problem
replace the belt too- its due on time if tensioner has quit

 

Thank you 01tl4tl. I'm assuming that you've got to take out a lot of stuff (side motor mount, etc. ) to get to that thing. The belt is only about 7 months old. I changed it when I did an engine swap last year.

Yah, I'm that guy. I don't remember exactly how that tensioner is fastened on to the motor, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Time to dig out the manual!
